Subject: An intergenerational health promotion program

The Adult Health & Development Program at the University of

Maryland at College Park (AHDP/UMCP) is an intergenerational

health promition and rehabilitation program that trains students

and volunteers to work on a one-to-one basis with the older

institutionalized and non-institutionalized adult. It is a 22

year old academic course, medical school elective.

Several colleges and universities have or will have their

own AHDP. We call this the National Network for Intergenerational

Health (NNIH). You may wish to have your students participate if

you are close by. Also you may wish to refer adults age 50 and

over as well. Sites include: Aurora University, Bloomsburg State

College, Howard University, Nicholls State University, Gallaudet

University, and Northern Virginia Community College. Universities

that will open their AHDPs during the fall 1994 or spring 1995

include the University of Delaware, and possibly Utica College.

Representatives from three Historic Black Colleges and

Universities were trained in June 1994 enabling them to join the

NNIH (Florida A & M University, Paine College, and Clark Atlanta

University). The HBCU sites, Western Colorado State University,

and the University of Miami at Oxford should be operational by

the spring 1995.

Subject: Teaching Assistantships for Masters and PhD Students

----------------------------Original message----------------------------
We have recently learned that we may have additional funding in the form of
teaching assistantships for qualified Masters and/or PhD students. We would
appreciate your assistance in identifying students at your institution who
might wish information about our graduate program. Specifically, we would
like to send a personal letter to any student you would recommend. On the
basis of your recommendation, we will personally communicate with any
student indicating interest in studying and teaching at Purdue. Typically,
our graduate student applicants have B+ cumulative GPAs and GREs > 1000. The
PhD applicants usually have had some health-related work experience, completed
an MS thesis, and GREs over 1200. Our teaching assistantships are usually
2 years for MS or 4 years for PhD students. A number of our faculty have
extramural funding and assistantships and fellowships have been awarded to
Health Promotion graduate students to assist them with their theses and
dissertations. Each of the HP faculty typically advise only 4 to 6 graduate
students.

Please e-mail the names and addresses of any student that you would recommend
for graduate study at Purdue so that we can personally contact them. Our
mailing address is Health Promotion, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN
47907-1362, c/o Roger Seehafer, Chair of the Division.

You may e-mail any one of the HP faculty by typing one of our last names
followed by @vm.cc.purdue.edu (e.g., black@vm.cc.purdue.edu).

Our sincere thanks and best wishes,

Briefly, there isn't. I hope whoever started off this daft message
finds that his/her algorithms never converge! It has wasted ridiculous amounts
of Internet traffic for the last fortnight, as well intentioned people pass it
on.
Please don't take this as any criticism of whoever has just sent this
message to the HEDIR list. The twerp(s) who started this know that responsible
people pass on virus messages to friends and colleagues, and this is precisely
why they chose this particular type of bogus message.
        Happy Christmas,
                Anthony Staines.

Dawna Wright from UT Austin called for suggestions on action research and
ecological issues in sustainability. We (Institute of Health Promotion
Research at Univ. British Columbia) have just finished a one-year study
and report for the Royal Society of Canada (equiv. to National Academy of
Sciences in U.S.) on Participatory Research in Health Promotion, its
history, current status and prospects for contributing to knowledge
development in health promotion. It is in press now and will be
available from the Royal Society of Canada, 207 Queen St., 3rd Floor,
P.O. Box 9734, Ottawa, Ontario K1G 5J4 Canada; tel. 613-992-3468, fax
613-992-5021, for $15. Ref: Green LW, George A, Daniel M, Frankish J,
Herbert CH, Bowie W, and O'Neill M, Paticipatory Research in Health
Promotion: Review and Recommendations for the Development of
Participatory Research in Health Promotion in Canada. Ottawa: The Royal
Society of Canada, 1995. It should be ready for mailing by late January.

On ecological approaches and sustainability, our postdoctoral fellow,
Lucie Richard has recently returned to the University of Montreal to
continue a national study she initiated on how ecologiical approaches are
reflected in the planning and execution of health promotion programs
across Canada. A special issue of the American Journal of Health
Promotion forthcoming will be devoted to ecological approaches in health
promotion. The underlying assumption of the connection is, presumably,
that more ecological approaches will ensure greater sustainability.

I hope this is not considered an advertisement. If it is, I apologize.
We will try to run a one week or 5-day session of Camp Rediscovery (CR) in
August 1995. CR is an intensive version of the 22 year old Adult Health &
Development Program (AHDP) at the University of Maryland (CR is not
related to the University). The Camp emphasizes physical and social
activities, fun, and health education. One unique feature is that the very
best staffers from the AHDP are used in the Camp. We have found the experience
to be helpful to those campers wishing to improve physical activity status,
health knowledge status, reduce stress, make friends, enjoy the outdoors, or
who are recently divorced or widowed, etc. We use the 4-H Camp and Conference
Center in Front Royal, VA. For further information contact me.

Are any of you currently using performanced based assessment as a part of a he

do you increase inter-rater reliability? If you have any information concernin

Thought folks might enjoy a bit of holiday cheer. The following was
sent to me via e-mail. Its author is unknown.

Subject: 16 reasons why God never received tenure at the University

    1. Because He* has only one major publication.
    2. and it was in Hebrew,
    3. and it had no references
    4. and it wasn't published in a refereed journal
    5. and some even doubted that He wrote it himself.
    6. It may be true that He created the world, but what has He done
    since?
    7. His cooperative efforts have been quite limited.
    8. The scientific community has had a very rough time trying to
    replicate his results.
    9. He never applied to the Ethics Board for permission to use human
    subjects.
    10. When one experiment went awry, He tried to cover it up by drowning
    the subjects.
    11. When subjects didn't behave as predicted, He often punished them,
or just deleted them from the sample.
    12. He rarely came to class; He just told students to read the book.
    13. He has His son teach the class.
    14. He expelled His first two students for learning too much
    15. Although there were only ten requirements, most students failed His
    tests.
    16. His office hours were infrequent, and usually held on a mountain
    top.

*Although this text is taken from modern writings, gender-specific
assertions are based on ancient and unvalidated assumptions.

        Happy Holidays.

If you are that Ernie, how is your baby? What a cutie!
