Our presentors will be Murray DeArmond,University of Arizona, Richard Keeling, University of Wisconsin, Maggie Bridwell, University of Maryland, and Michael Haines, Northern Illinois University. Michael has generously offered to participate in place of Peggy Spear of Penn State who had to cancel. The discussion will focus on the role of health education/health promotion within the health service, and future considerations given health care reform. Issues of primary vs. secondary prevention, risk reduction/harm minimization will be aired, and positioning of the unit within Student Health/Student Affairs, etc. will be addressed. I've asked the panel to also talk about the nitty gritty issues we face every day which include "the wearing of many hats", how the units are funded, partnerships and linkages in the Health Service and on campus. This is shaping up to be a terrific session and I hope you will all attend with your directors. Hope to see you all soon. PE has several different programs including one in which a combined H & PE teaching certificate is awarded. This was announced along with other proposals for mergers of departments. I urgently need outside opinions on this. The Department of Health Professions is going to respond in the next few days and I am hoping that some of you may be able to offer some thoughts on this issue. Some people believe this is an anachronism since the Department of Health Professions broke away from a Dept. of Health and PE some 25 years ago. Others think differently.
