Hello HED netters,

I am looking for a computerized Health Risk Appraisal program.
Specifically, I would like one that a college student would be able answer
questions, then have the risk appraisal before he/she left. I have
capability for either PC or Mac (prefer Mac). CD/ROM or disk would be fine
as well. Does anyone out there know of a program or where I could start
looking? If so, I am at:

Subject: Asthma Education Measures

I have cross-posted the following request to several lists and apologize if
you receive more than one copy.

I am working on an asthma education project that will go into our county
hospital district clinics. The project will involve both patient education
and CME for the physician staff. In order not to re-invent the wheel, we
would like to find out about existing objective measures of patient and/or
physician knowledge and skills (including proper use of inhalers, spacers,
and peak flow meters), as well as quality of life measures vis a vis the
patients' control of their asthma.

In the articles I have seen, reference is often made to measures used in a
study, but the instruments/scales and reliability data are often not
included. I have seen nothing about any standardized measures.

I would appreciate your letting me know of any such measures that you know
of, and a person whom I can contact to get a copy. It would be ideal, of
course, if you can include an email address, telephone number, or postal
address. Please respond directly to my email address.

Many thanks in advance.

From: Nicholas K. Iammarino (Rice University)

Re: Study of the British Health Care Delivery System

A three week travel and/or study abroad trip to England/Scotland is
currently being planned from approximately May 15th to June 3rd. The trip
will include observations of the health care delivery system in these
countries. It will involve visitation and obvservation of educational,
medical, clinical, as well as public health programs. Enrollment is limited
on a first come, first served basis. There are three options that a person
may consider:

        1. You (or your students) can take the trip for academic credit
(3 semester hours). Individuals choosing this option will have
to attend the visitations, and complete normal course
                requirements.

        2. The Non credit option. Health Professionls who go on the
trip
may be eligible to receive an IRS deduction. Health
Professionals choosing the non credit option will be required
to attend the visitations but will not have to meet other course
obligations, such as course readings and other assignments.

        3. Just go on the trip but neither for credit nor a possible IRS
write-off. These individuals are completely free to come and
go whenever they want. All arrangements for transportation,
lodging, etc. will be made for these individuals but how they
spend their time is completely up to them. Information on
                sight-seeing will be provided.

The cost of the trip is estimated to be about $2,650. from Chicago and
$2,850 from Houston. Included in this cost is round trip air fare, food,
lodging, a British Rail Pass, and other ground transportation costs and
related trip expenses. Tuition for those taking the course for credit is
not included.

We believe this is a good opportunity to combine many types of learning
and a goodly amount of enjoyment at a relatively reasonable cost. More than
adequate time will be given to "doing your own thing."

Feel free to contact either Nicholas Iammarino at 713-527-4998 or Tom
O'Rourke at 217-333-3163 if you desire additional information.

You may wish to announce this to students in your classes who might be
looking for this type of Spring/early Summer program. This is an excellent
study abroad opportunity for your students who are interested in health
care policy/economics. Premedical and other health professions students
should also find this opportunity of interest.

Remember - final selection will be on a first come -first served basis.
Therefore, if you think you MIGHT like to go, then sign up early. You are
under no obligation. This will enable you to receive forthcoming
information concerning the specifics of the trip.

I'll be leaving on Wednesday the 26th for APHA, and before I did I
needed to give some general information:

1. The November edition of the Directory will not be sent
until November 6 or 7th. I won't be getting home from APHA
until the 3rd and I'll need a couple days to get organized.

2. There is no scheduled meeting for email enthusiastics at
APHA, however I'll be at the Public Health/School Health social
(I'm not sure when that will be). In both instances I'll be there.
I would enjoy meeting many
of you that I just know by email. I'll also have some
hard copies of the directory. Again, the growth of this
directory is attributed to those on this list...please
let others know about it.

3. I'm not real happy with the appearance/layout of the
directory. If you have any suggestions, please let me know
what you think.
