Dear Colleagues,

Many of you may have heard about the new teaching manual Peggy Brick and =
I recently published, "Educating About Abortion." (If you haven't =
heard, information can be found at http://www.ppgnnj.org/manuals.htm) =
We believe this manual's publication is timely, as the Kaiser Family =
Foundation recently found that 79% of American parents favor including =
abortion in sexuality education classes.
=20
The nine lessons in "Educating About Abortion" provide thought-provoking =
activities and give accurate information about abortion. The manual =
strives to empower students to examine their own beliefs and prepare =
themselves for making real-life decisions. "Educating About Abortion" is =
built upon an examination of the most contemporary research in the =
field, includes input from educators, and has field-tested lessons =
geared to involving students in thinking about both issues and their own =
behaviors.
=20
FREE COPIES?!
We are pursuing a grant that would allow us to distribute this manual =
free of charge. We are asking you for a letter supporting our =
grant-seeking efforts. If you are interested in supporting us, please =
describe in your letter the need for this teaching manual in your =
community. We would like to know how many copies you believe you could =
distribute freely to educators in your community. In addition to =
yourself, recipients might include:
=B7 Your own education staff
=B7 Your library
=B7 High school teachers and college professors in your community
(e.g. to distribute the manual either through an existing mailing list, =
or to give them away for free at workshops and conferences)
=B7 Family planning professionals in your community
=B7 Members of Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Coalitions in each county =
your affiliate serves.
=B7 Others who would use this manual to educate young people about =
abortion.
=20
In your letter, please provide as much information as possible about who =
the manual recipients would be (particularly how many educators, how =
many for your library(ies), etc.).
=20
We are excited about this new manual, and hope that our grant-seeking =
efforts are successful so that we may share this resource freely with =
you.

Sincerely,

Bill Taverner

RE: Neglect of Men's Health=20

Dear Congress member _________________,

To create healthier families and communities, men's health requires =
specific attention from the federal government. Congress recognized this =
is 1994 when it passed the National Men's Health Week proclamation in =
acknowledgment of a public health crisis in the status of men's health.

On January 25, 2000, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services =
released the official version of Healthy People 2010. One of the major =
goals of Healthy People 2010 is the elimination of all health =
disparities. The first health disparity listed is that of gender:

On February 14, Representatives Duke Cunningham (R-CA) and Jim McDermott =
(D-WA) introduced the Men's Health Act (H.R. 632). This was in =
recognition of the continuing crisis in men's health and the 5:1 DHHS =
gender funding disparity (women:men), that has existed for many years. =
This bill now has 68 co-sponsors in the House of Representatives. The =
Representatives also requested that DHHS Secretary Tommy Thompson =
administratively establish an Office of Men's Health, and include that =
in his funding request for FY 2002.

On February 21 and 27, in light of growing clinical evidence and data =
analysis, the National Institutes of Health issued formal letters that =
repudiated earlier claims that women were neglected by medical research. =
The NIH Office of Research on Women's Health agreed to retract a 1997 =
statement that "women were routinely excluded from medical research =
supported by NIH."=20

I support the five current national offices that exist for the promotion =
of women's health; namely,=20

1. DHHS Office of Women's Health

2. NIH Office of Research on Women's Health

3. FDA Office of Women's Health

4. CDC Office of Women's Health

5. HRSA Office of Women's Health, within the Maternal and Child Health =
Branch

However, on April 9, Secretary Thompson's proposed budget for Fiscal =
Year 2002 contained $0 for an Office of Men's Health =
(www.hhs.gov/budget/pdf/hhs2002.pdf). In contrast, the DHHS Office of =
Women's Health is slated for a huge $10 million increase, from $17 =
million in FY 2001 to $27 million in FY 2002. If approved, Thompson's =
budget request would only worsen the gender disparity

I support women's health, but men's health deserves equal attention. Men =
suffer disproportionately higher rates of the top 15 causes of premature =
death, the top 30 lifestyle risk factors, injuries, and more. The United =
States should not take the health of any of its citizens for granted. =
Don't men deserve an equal chance at a long and healthy life?

Please contact Secretary Thompson and demand that the DHHS establish the =
Office of Men's Health, and pay equal attention to the health needs of =
men.

Sincerely,

cc. Secretary Tommy Thompson
