Do your students have ideas about reforming the health care system?
One alternative to spending more money is described at the Wellness
Center--comments are welcomed from list members, students and everyone else.
Comments can be posted at the site (see message board) or sent directly to
me.
The free service for empowering students and others offers daily
essays. A partial sample of today's essay on the topic of system reform is
appended, below. There are nearly 250 such essays archived at the site,
easily accessible under the three domains of wellness by 14 skill area
topics. See the Daily Report Archive by topic or by date at the bottom of
each days essay. There are interviews with Sol Gordon on sex and
relationships, Deb Jones on Canadian workplace wellness, Deb Gauldin on
wellness entertainment, Izzy Gesell on gender differences and other
obstacles to good communications, Kenneth Cooper on aerobics and President
Bush, David Haber on the need for a U.S. Wellness General, Leigh Farnell on
the Megaperformers Conference, Julyan Lee on "Six Thinking Hats," Bill
Carlyon on doublespeak in health promotion, Judd Allen on healthy cultures,
Bill Hettler on criticisms of the National Wellness Conference, Grant

life. In addition, Im interviewed by students at Minnesota State

field. As if this were not enough, the Wellness Center now offers an

threads, including great issues in health education. Also, a wellness
resources section with recommended websites and conference listings,
recommended wellness initiatives to combat fraud on the internet, bargains
on quality wellness products and more.

The Academy for Educational Development is seeking a Policy Director, a
Civil Service Organization (CSO) Advocacy Capacity Building Coordinator,
and a Finance/Grants Coordinator for a future HIV/AIDS project in Southern
Africa.
The project will provide technical assistance in the area of policy
development in the public sector to strengthen government understanding of
policy effectiveness in designing and implementing policy; and to
strengthen the advocacy capacity of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to
create interactions between public and private institutions for more
effective policies related to HIV/AIDS.
The Policy Director will coordinate policy reviews, research, and analyses
which contribute to understanding and addressing policy awareness and
change; establish the analytic and presentation tools and policy models
that will help foster the development of policy in the public sector,
thereby strengthening the government's understanding of policy
effectiveness; provide technical assistance through presentations,
workshops, training, and dissemination activities; link the international
technical expertise with that of local specialists and collaborating
institutions and districts; coordinate the development and implementation
of the national community planning group; liaise with the CSO Advocacy
Coordinator; and provide additional management expertise to the Project
Director in managing the volume and complexity of program operations.
The Civil Service Organizations (CSO) Advocacy Capacity Coordinator will
provide backstopping to the Chief of Party and coordinate advocacy and
capacity building activities for grantees civil society organization, and
partnering organizations.
Additional responsibilities include: providing advocacy training to the
overall strengthening of community organizations; coordinating the network
of strategic alliances; working with partners on a district and provincial
level; and coordinating activities with the policy coordinator.
The Finance and Grants Coordinator will provide leadership and overall
financial and grants management to the project using the "completion-style"
contract system; develop systems to track the overall financial status of
projects, including preparation of financial reports and the development
and maintenance of budgets; manage the grants program ensuring the quality
and efficiency of the grant project interventions, timeliness and quality
of grant reporting; and administer the grants solicitation and approval
process. This will involve close coordination with in-country technical and
administrative staff, project support personnel in Washington, grantees,
and subcontractors.
