Dear Colleagues,
I would like to take this opportunity to identify some key points from the
2001 NCAA Survey of Substance Use Habits of College Student Athletes
http://www.ncaa.org/sports_sciences/education and to correct a reporting
error.
The data from this survey has been used in a flurry of stories this week,
and one piece of data which was taken from the survey erroneously has become
the foundation for many articles. The NCAA survey asked " Have you used
nutritional supplements (excluding multi-vitamins) in the last 12 months?"
58.4% responded NO. Therefore, the majority of student-athletes have not
used nutritional supplements in the last 12 months.

· The survey's bedrock message is this: The majority of NCAA
student-athletes do not use illicit drugs, do not use nutritional
supplements and do not abuse alcohol.

· Two of the indications of positive trends from the survey:
1) that the use of spit tobacco has decreased steadily
since 1989 and
2) that the use of anabolic steroids is much lower than it
was in 1989

· These results tell us that programs and policies that were
put in place to educate student-athletes about drug use have been effective.
We will continue those efforts.

· Clearly, the results of the survey show areas of concern,
and we have more work to be done. The survey was conducted to give us a
sense of the areas we need to focus other educational efforts.
1) nutritional supplement use
2) alcohol abuse
3) cigarette/other tobacco use

Thank you for allowing me this forum to provide this information.

I'm assisting a faculty group who have been tasked to develop an
interdisciplinary honors course on "Healthy Communities". The "perfect"
text would be a collection of essays written by a variety of professionals
describing various aspects of a healthy community. Key areas the course
will explore include education, economics, healthcare access, culture, and
community health assessment. Does anyone have a suggestion for a textbook
that would meet this need? Thank you very much for your suggestions.

Hi,

I've use both free and paid. In your situation, If it's just for a
workgroup and not a commercial venture, I'd say, why pay.

Check out: http://www.topica.com/ I used them to set up a discussion list
for AWHP's region 1

Please feel free to contact me if I can help.
