CHHCS News Alert 12/13/01

Grant Funding Opportunities from Sound Partners for Community Health:
School Based Health Centers and school health programs looking for an
opportunity to build community support for their work should consider
partnering with a public broadcaster to do programming on health issues
affecting school-age children.

Subject: invervention mapping and EMPOWER software

I have received several private messages and a few requests to post
responses to the list. A few people mentioned the book on intervention
mapping (I have been using this book, which I neglected to mention):

"Intervention Mapping: Designing Theory and Evidence-Based Health Promotion
programs" by L. Kay Bartholomew, Guy S. Parcel, Gerjo Kok, and Nell H. Gottlieb

One noted the Precede-Proceed web site: <http://www.lgreen.net/precede.htm>.

MapPoint software is being used by one respondent who recommends it. It is
a geographical mapping software.

The EMPOWER software is a decision support software to support
Precede-Proceed planning. It is available from Jones and Bartlett
publishers <http://www.jbpub.com/>. It is developed by Robert S. Gold,
Lawrence Green and Marshall W. Kreuter. The example given in the program
is a program for early detection of breast cancer. However, it is designed
to develop your own programs.

One respondent tried to use EMPOWER software for a project and ran into a
roadblock early on and was not able to resolve it.

I also sent an e-mail directly to Kay Bartholomew who said that the just
use Work (I am not familiar with this software) and also mentioned that
they are working on templates which should be on their website in the
spring. Nell Gottleib, another coauthor of the intervention mapping text,
uses Excel.

Hi all, I don't normally do this, but since the Bartholomew et al. book just
moved to McGraw-Hill this summer from Mayfield, I thought that I would
mention it. Anyone who wants more information can visit our web site at
www.mhhe.com/hhp Look under Health and then Health Promotion.
