Subject: New Phytologist article
We had a little announcement in a local paper about a published piece on
air pollution and plants for food this week. According to it,
environmental pollutants resulting from burning fossils would travel to
plants used for food, corn leaves investigated. The piece lets to
believe that a third of the pollutants travel to inside the plant via
leaves and washing will not be effective in removing the pollutants. It
is implied that corn would contain some of the pollutants gathered via
air.
Has anyone here read the original article they are refering to?

Subject: Re: HIV/AIDS case management
Friends,
I am developing a curriculum for case managers who provide services to =
folks who are infected with HIV or have developed AIDS. While revewing the =
literature on case management I discovered Case Management Society of =
America. That association defines case management as:
a collaborative process which assesses, plans, implements, coordinates, =
monitors and evaluates the options and services required to meet an =
individual's health needs, using communications and available resources to =
promote quality, cost-effective outcomes (http://www.cmsa.org/meminfo/mem-m=
ain.html}
Indeed our state's own Principles and Standards outlines the same =
components (you know where I am going with this...).=20
Despite the striking resemblance of CM to our own Areas of Responsibility, =
I can find no mention of case management in "our" literature (nursing CM =
is philosophically different and treatment-oriented).=20
My questions are:
Have we made a uniqe contribution to CM that has not been published?=20
What are the ethical implications of a professional association duplicating=
the practices of another and requiring membership dues/CEUs (CMSA was =
established in 1990--what would Helen Cleary say??)?
Thanks for any literature reccomendations or other fodder.

Dear Dr. Kittleson,
Could you kindly consider to distribute this self-explanatory message from

other individuals or listservs you feel might be appropriate.
Thanking you in advance,

Posting to members of HEDIR listserv:
This is an important message from the World Health Organization. We are
carrying out a large-scale investigation to assess the performance of health
systems in all the countries of the world. The results will be published in
our World Health Report [<http://www.who.int/whr>]. This investigation seeks
to improve on existing methods and data to assess the performance of health
services. You can learn more about this by looking at
<http://www.who.int/whosis> see under "Statistical data from the World
Health Report 2000"
This portion of our investigation is focusing on Key Informants, persons
involved in and knowledgeable about the health systems and related areas in
their country. We are attempting to contact as many potential Key
Informants as possible via email.
Your HEDIR listserv has come to our attention as an excellent source of
people who could make a significant contribution to this important WHO
investigation, and we would very much appreciate your taking 20-30 minutes
to complete an online questionnaire, which can be found at
<http://www.who.int/evidence/ki-survey-01> . If, after completing the
survey, you know of any additional persons you feel could also make a
contribution please forward this message to them, too.
Thank you for your cooperation and assistance in helping the World Health
Organization to continue to further develop its methodology and improve its
database so that all the countries of the world will have a better basis for
improving the performance of their health systems.
Sincerely yours,
James L. Duppenthaler

Subject: Professions with Areas of Responsibility in Common
Ric Underhile and HEDIRs Concerned about NCM Having Areas of
Responsibility in Common with Health Education Specialists:
I do not believe that Dr. Helen Cleary would be in the least
surprised by Ric's observation of nurse case managers identifying
assessing needs, planning, implementing, coordinating, monitoring and
evaluating as areas of responsibility in their professional practice.
These are common processes in the performance social and health service
professionals. The key is noting the purposes for which each process
is employed and the additional responsibilities that complement these.
When you look closely at the specific competencies which reflect the
knowledge and skills necessary to perform the practices within the role
of the health education specialist, you will find that they differ in
important ways from those of nurse case managers.
Most master level professional preparations programs prepare
professionals to manage and administer programs within their fields of
expertise, perform some research, and contribute to the advancement of
their professions. These are the areas of responsibility that were
added by the joint task force that developed the graduate
competencies. Doctoral programs in all professional fields have the
goal of developing their students as scholars with advanced knowledge
and skills in research methodologies and theory development. Again, the
aspect that makes the professions distinct is the manner in which they
focus their knowledge, skills, and practices. The outcomes sought by
nurse case managers are somewhat different than those sought by the
health education specialist.
You should never be disappointed to find that other intelligent and
resourceful people arrived at the same idea or concept at which you
arrived. This merely confirms that you were intelligent and resourceful
since you arrrived at it in a similar way. If, however, someone copies
your ideas or concepts, you should be flattered that they valued it so
highly that they would steal it.
It now appears that Guttenberg did not invent movable type as an
isolated discovery; he merely gets credit for it because he got good
press. As my dear old granddaddy always said: There is nothing new
under the sun, just slick marketing repackaging it.
