Slimey Spammers Strike Again!

I went to the web site they list as how to be removed from future mailings
to investigate how to get the HEDIR removed from their spamming list AND to
find billing information to pursue payment for their unsolicited
trash. These pigs are very clever, no address, no unsubscribe instructions
and the phone number listed for technical support is no good. Very
frustrating.

It's not effective to hit "reply" and ask to be unsubscribed from
spam. They will likely collect the email address that the request came
from and send you more!

Just wanted you to know that I do make every effort to pursue these slimey
pigs!

Thanks to our legislators, they have written into the law that defines a spam differently than you and I define it. The law allows people (spammers) to send it but they must give the reader (or the hedir participants) an opportunity to request to be taken off the list. In the bottom of the ad is this statement. Of course, what this does is to verify one's email which they will sell to others. It's best to not do anything but to trash it. I also don't think we need to acknowledge that this type of ad shouldn't be on the HEDIR.

What's unfortunate is that Mark Fulop sends some legitimate information that most people probably trashed because it followed three emails with the 'hot teen land'.

This is one of the drawbacks to being on a list. Unless you want to somebody to censor all memos we can't prevent this. Who would we want to do that?

DO NOT DELETE THIS MESSAGE UNTIL AFTER YOU HAVE READ THIS.

The recent email over the HEDIR advertising a pornographic site has lead me to do the following. It is very important that you read these directions and follow them explicitly.

On Friday, February 16, 2001 I will be configuring the HEDIR email system so that only people who are registered to the HEDIR can send an email. I know some are thinking...so what? He should have done that a long time ago. Unfortunately there is a price to pay...and that price may fall somewhat on my head.

When I configure the system, the only people who will be allowed to send will be those individuals who are registered. BUT, and a big but, the email on the HEDIR system must match EXACTLY with the email that you are using on your computer. Any slight deviation will prevent you from sending a message.

For example, my email is kittle@siu.edu. Sometimes my email will appear as kittle@saluki-mail.siu.edu. Now technically they are the same...but according to the HEDIR it will reject the kittle@saluki-mail.siu.edu. There are many of you that have an email such as xxx@xxx.edu...but when I receive an email from you personally (or from the HEDIR) there will be a small difference...like xxx@mail.xxx.edu
Starting on Friday any message like that will not be sent over the HEDIR.

So here is the solution (that hopefully may save me a lot of time)...
I need you to go to the following web page:

www.hedir.org/update.txt

It is not a fancy page, but it lists all people who are on the HEDIR as of this am.
You will see the first line with your email, the second and third line with your name.
I have the list by alphabetical order based on your email.
Please find your name and note your email.

Then, you need to get into your email system and make sure you configure the email to be the same as on that list. If you need help, call your local computer guru. Ask them that you need to configure your 'email client' to a particular address. For instance, in Eudora, I can go to 'tools', pull down to options, and make changes.

Once that is done you will be able to successfully send an email. If the email listed on the web page is incorrect, you will need to go to www.hedir.org/subscribe and punch in the old and new emails, along with the remaining information (this is where the price is falling on my head...).

One final note...these small differences in the email will not affect your ability to RECEIVE, but only to send.

Thanks for your help, patience, and willingness to put up with this slight inconvenience.

Mark

I want to thank Mark for taking steps to reduce spam on this list and angst with him over his decision to tighten the posting reigns. It will take a while for all of us to "get it" so do read his IMPORTANT message....

Here are a few more points about spam to keep in mind.

1. Spam does not originate from a list member. Hot teens is likley not a health education project of a list member but some marketer, in essence hijacked the HEDIR posting address with an automated tool and came in through the back door. So when a member receives a spam and then posts a second or third message that says "this is an inappropriate message to the list" only adds to the confusion. Of course it is inappropriate and was posted without Mark or anyone else knowing.

2. Do NOT try to follow remove instructions! First, as Micheala suggested you will have affirmed that your e-mail address is valid, and therefore will receive even MORE spam,

3. More likely, if you send a reply to the "originator" you will likley receive a follow-up e-mail stating that the e-mail address you replied to is invalid.

4. Tracking down spammers is often a futile and dead end effort as the electronic nature of spamming makes it easy for spamming companies to virtually move around every day. By reacting to spam, we on the list are the only one to loose out. I applaud Michaela for taking the time to lodge a complaint but even if it only took Michaela a half an hour to make the complaint, she lost that much time in productivity. Mark Kittleson has lost productivity changing the admin structure of the list, and even I am loosing productivity by writing this response. So the one spam this list received may have collectively this list a bunch of time and productivity.

5. Spam is like junk mail and the sooner we get numb to receiving it the better off we will be. When I check my mail at the top of the hill where I live, I start chucking junk mail on the passenger seat floor so that a half a mile later when I hit my front door, I have a fraction of the mail that was stuffed in my mailbox. I clean the paper trash on the floor of my car once a month and it all goes right into the recycling bin. I have the same phiolosophy with my email. Spam is often as easy to detect as the bulk mail rate on credit card application envelopes. Often even easier. I am not likely to send or have friends send me messages like "cheap toner" or "hot lusty teens" so it is pretty easy to hit delete without opening.

I hope these guidelines are helpful and if you want more detailed info, here are two pretty good resources and a link to all things anti-spam. enjoy
