Dear Listserv members (please excuse the cross posting):

I am currently researching stats, rates and possible determinants of
childhood obesity.
I am also looking for prevention or treatment efforts that are being done
what’s working/what’s not, etc.
Any recommendations for articles, publications, organizations or specific
websites, would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

For those of you interested in sexuality education, the following
Washington DC "happenings" may be of interest.

Alert Date: Oct. 10, 2001

HOUSE TO VOTE ON ANTI-CHOICE AMENDMENTS ON THURSDAY
________________________________________________________________

ACTION:

Tell <your Representative> to vote against two anti-choice amendments
being offered to the Labor HHS appropriations bill by
Representatives Istook (R-OK) and Hart (R-PA). Istook's
amendment would create a $33 million abstinence-ONLY education
program and Hart's amendment would punish schools that
distribute emergency contraception by taking away federal
funding. The Christian Coalition is organizing on these
amendments. It is critical that we counter their efforts.

ACTION PLAN:

These amendments could be offered as soon as Thursday,
October 11! Call your Representative today!

To find your representative's address, visit:

http://www.house.gov/writerep/

Scroll down for more information on these amendments and
talking points.
________________________________________________________________

*** REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS UNDER ATTACK ***

The right wing is seeking to tie the hands of our educators by
preventing them from providing comprehensive sex education and
pregnancy prevention programs. Research shows that age-
appropriate and medically accurate sexuality education that
provides information about contraceptives, sexually transmitted
diseases and abstinence is far more effective than abstinence-
only education in helping teens to delay sexual activity.
Despite this evidence, Rep. Istook is seeking to increase
abstinence-only education.

Rep. Hart is also poised to offer an amendment that would
prevent school-based health clinics that provide emergency
contraception from receiving federal funds. This is contrary to
our shared national goal of reducing rates of teen pregnancy and
abortion. It also jeopardizes the health of low-income teens
and it overrides the federal Food and Drug Administration's
determination that emergency contraception is a safe and
effective method of pregnancy prevention.

The amendment is also designed to perpetuate confusion between
emergency contraception and RU-486. Emergency contraception is
often referred to as the "morning after pill" and is similar to
taking ordinary birth control pills; it is not RU-486,
which is taken to induce an abortion under medical supervision.
________________________________________________________________

*** TALKING POINTS ***

ABSTINENCE-ONLY EDUCATION

*Young people need comprehensive sexuality education that
encourages them to delay sexual activity while providing them
with accurate information about how to protect themselves
against unintended pregnancy and STDs, including HIV/AIDS.

*There is no credible evidence that abstinence-only education
works.

*Contraception, rather than abstinence, is most responsible for
the recent decline in teen pregnancy.

*Major medical, public health and research groups and
institutions support more comprehensive forms of sexuality
education that include information about both abstinence and
contraception.

EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION

*Emergency contraception is just that-contraception. Approved
for use by the FDA to PREVENT pregnancy, emergency contraceptive
pills are ordinary birth control pills taken within 72 hours
following unprotected sex or a contraceptive failure. They can
reduce the risk of pregnancy by as much as 89 percent. Emergency
contraception cannot interrupt or disrupt an established
pregnancy and should not be confused with mifepristone (also
known as RU 486).

*The Hart amendment will not reduce teen sexual activity but
instead will deny teens who have had unprotected sex or have
experienced a contraceptive failure access to the services
necessary to avoid unintended pregnancy.

*The Hart amendment is contrary to the recommendations of major
medical and public health organizations, which support young
people's access to confidential health care.

*Each year, nearly one million U.S. teens become pregnant, and
half of these pregnancies end in abortion. Timely access to
emergency contraception can help reduce these staggering rates.

Hello Everyone.

I am the wellness coordinator for a worksite of approximately 400
employees. In light of what has happened over the past month and due
to the fact that we are entering into the winter months, I'd like to
focus a bit more on depresssion/stress. Does anyone know of any 3
to 6 week programs that can be used in a worksite setting. I know
that mental health (depression) is a very personal issue, and
therefore, I think if I market it as a program focusing on
depression/stress, the turnout might be greater.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Caryl
