Hi Hema and all-
I am interested in finding out more about the needs assessment project you are doing as well as the training. I am currently finishing up a similar project in NYC and would be love to share ideas and experiences. I also trained community surveyors.

Has anyone else done a similar project?

I can be reached at cazar1@health.nyc.gov or 718-262-5511. I look forward to hearing from you.

Deadlines: September 15, 2002 for Assistant Editors

November 1, 2002, for all manuscripts/multimedia presentations

URL: http://www.cjhp.org <http://www.cjhp.org/>

CALL FOR MANUSCRIPTS

The Californian Journal of Health Promotion (CJHP) is a new scholarly,
peer-reviewed, online journal focusing on health education and health
promotion practice, teaching, research, and issues of interest to
professionals in California and the surrounding Western USA states. The CJHP
differs from other health education and promotion journals in that it
focuses on information that has more local, rather than national or
international relevance and interest. The CJHP publishes multimedia
presentations, along with traditional manuscripts, to take advantage of
Internet technologies. The journal will be published quarterly.

The CJHP was established to disseminate scholarly information useful to
health education and health promotion practitioners, academics, and students
in California and the surrounding Western USA states. The mission of the
journal is to maintain a local flavor to the journal content. The content
areas that will be published include:

1. Editorials

2. Professional Practice (School, Community, Clinical, Worksite, University
Professional Preparation and Health Services)- articles discussing
professional practice in a variety of settings or multimedia presentations
that can be used in teaching or conducting health education and health
promotion programs.

3. Theory and Research- research studies (both qualitative and
quantitative), theory papers, and review articles.

4. Beyond California-articles/multimedia presentations focusing beyond
California in Western USA, or on the national, and international levels, but
has relevance to or may be applied in California health education and health
promotion programs.

5. CHES Exam Review- Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) exam
review articles/lessons or multimedia presentations with practice test
items. [Disclaimer: The CJHP is not affiliated with the National
Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. (NCHEC), nor has any
knowledge regarding the content or format of the Certified Health Education
Specialist Exam. Thus, this section of the journal is strictly for review
purposes and testing one's knowledge of health education and health
promotion. Performance on the practice test items in the CJHP is not an
indicator of performance on the actual Certified Health Education Specialist
Exam administered by NCHEC.].

6. Professional Updates-news and columns from established health education
and health promotion professional associations, announcements for health
fairs, grants, calls for manuscripts/abstracts, professional conferences,
and so on.

The Editorial Board welcomes a broad variety of scholarly manuscripts and
multimedia presentations useful to those in academia, practitioners, and
students in California and the surrounding Western USA States. Of
particular interest to the CJHP are manuscripts and multimedia presentations
covering the following areas: health behavior, evaluation of existing local
health education and promotion programs, summary articles of existing
programs in a particular local city or region, special population health
(minority, Native American, immigrant, border), comparative local K-12
health curriculum trends and teacher training programs by school district,
patient education techniques used in local medical care facilities, use of
technology in health education and health promotion, local health advocacy,
coalitions and partnerships, local trends in professional practice and
workforce, review of existing theories, introduction of models and
conceptual frameworks, case studies, health legislation, and health
disparities. Health education and health promotion programming in special
populations such as low literacy, homeless, elderly, disabled, foster care
and adoptable children and families, etc., are greatly desired.

In addition, multimedia presentations that can be used in teaching or
delivering health promotion programs, as well as articles dealing with CHES
and preparing for the CHES examination are greatly desired. [Disclaimer:
The CJHP is not affiliated with the National Commission for Health Education
Credentialing, Inc. (NCHEC), nor has any knowledge regarding the content or
format of the Certified Health Education Specialist Exam. Thus, this
section of the journal is strictly for review purposes and testing one's
knowledge of health education and health promotion. Performance on the
practice test items in the CJHP is not an indicator of performance on the
actual Certified Health Education Specialist Exam administered by NCHEC.].

Manuscript Preparation

Please submit all manuscripts as e-mail attachments. All manuscripts not
meeting the specifications below will be returned without review.

1. All manuscripts must be submitted in MS Word (preferred) or WordPerfect
format.

2. Formatting: 1 inch margins, page numbering bottom center, Times New Roman
font, 12 point letter size.

3. Manuscripts must be in American Psychological Association (APA) format.

4. Save files in Rich Text Format (RTF) if manuscript is in a format other
than MS Word 2000.

5. Manuscripts larger than 400 KB should be zipped to prevent jamming of
CJHP e-mail accounts.

6. Please assure that the manuscript files were scanned with an antivirus
program prior to e-mailing it to CJHP.

7. If the content of the manuscript was discussed with the Editor or an
Associate Editor prior to submission, please indicate this information in
the e-mail.

8. Manuscripts for the CHES Exam Review section of the journal must specify
the areas of responsibility and competencies/sub-competencies being
addressed, learning objectives, current citations, practice multiple choice
test questions, answers with explanations, and helpful advice.

9. All forms, questionnaires, and other associated documents intended to be
published in an Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF) should be
formatted appropriately for ease of use. For example, if PDF forms are to
be published, the Adobe Acrobat Forms Tool should be used to create
textboxes, checkboxes, and other interactive features so that the user can
simply fill out the PDF form using their computer.

Multimedia Presentations

1. Multimedia Presentations should be designed using commonly available
software applications such as MS PowerPoint(r). Authors considering
submitting digitized videos of interviews, skills building exercises,
lectures about various health education topics, keynote addresses from
conferences and seminars, etc., should first consult the Editor. A signed
release form and other legal documentation may be required. Digitized video
and audio files will be delivered through the CJHP as live streaming audio
and video. Thus, the quality of the presentations should be academic
quality. Authors are responsible for formatting the file for such delivery.
Due to the large size of files and the bandwidth necessary to deliver live
streaming video, the CJHP reserves the right to deliver clips of
presentations, with the approval of the author, rather than full length
presentations. The entire video presentations on CD ROM would then have to
be purchased at a nominal cost from CJHP.

2. Authors considering submitting files that are several megabytes in size
should first consult with the Editor about the best method to transfer the
files over the Internet. All presentations must be zipped.

3. The quality of presentations must be consistent with other academic
expectations such as currency (footnoted current citations required),
authority, coverage, releases, and writing style. Materials used in the
presentation must be consistent with existing copyright laws. For MS
PowerPoint presentations, authors should assure that formatting, color
scheme, volume of materials per slide, letter sizes, and other design
features are consistent with the goals and objectives of the presentation,
and appropriate for the target population.

4. All presentations must include clearly defined target populations,
learning objectives, and current citations, psychometrically reliable and
valid test questions, implications for health education (if applicable), and
links to online resources for further study. Those authors submitting a
multimedia presentation without an accompanying full-length manuscript must
still include a short paper (1-2 journal pages) that includes a Title,
Abstract, and Keywords. The body of this short paper must include the
following sections: Introduction- provide and introduction and background
information about why the multimedia presentation was developed;
Instructions- identify the goals and objectives, target population/grade
level; Outline of Presentation-a gross outline of the slides; and
Evaluation- All multimedia presentations must have been tested or
successfully used in a particular population. Please indicate how and where
the instrument was tested and the results of the test. If the presentation
is currently in use at a college or community organization, please indicate
that in this Evaluation section.

8. Multimedia presentations for the CHES Exam Review section of the journal
must specify the areas of Responsibility and Competencies/Sub-Competencies
being addressed, learning objectives, current citations, practice multiple
choice test questions, test question answers with explanations, and helpful
advice.
