FYI. Colleen
American Legacy Foundation Offers Small Grants Program to Reduce Tobacco =
Use
Deadline: Rolling
Created as a result of the settlement of the multi-state
lawsuit against tobacco companies, the American Legacy Foundation =
(Legacy), is a nonprofit organization that works to reduce youth tobacco =
use, reduce exposure to second-hand smoke among all ages and =
populations, increase successful quit rate among all ages and =
populations, and reduce disparities in access to prevention and =
cessation services and in exposure to secondhand smoke on behalf of =
disadvantaged populations.
Legacy is currently funding unsolicited grants through its
Small Innovative Grants Program. The program is designed to support =
projects that advance innovative, evidence-based solutions to remedy the =
harm caused by tobacco use in America. Legacy intends the Small =
Innovative Grants Program to seed new projects, enable an organization =
to pilot a new idea or approach, or help an organization gain a =
different perspective or better understanding of tobacco control through =
research.
The program awards renewable grants for up to $100,000 for the first =
year of funding. Grantees may apply for a second year of funding for up =
to 50 percent of the amount awarded in the first year. Grantees must =
provide a 1:1 cash match for second-year funding. A cash match is =
encouraged but not required for the first year of funding.
Under the Small Innovative Grants Program, Legacy will
consider projects in most topic areas related to Legacy's
goals. Special consideration will be given to applications
addressing: tobacco prevention, cessation, and education
for 18 to 24 year olds; second-hand smoke education and policy; and =
projects targeting rural settings. (For
projects related specifically to women and girls, see
Legacy's Circle of Friends -- Women Unite to Be Smoke Free Small Grants =
Program.)
Funding is available only to state or local political
subdivisions and legally constituted tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organizations =
based in the 46 states, the District of
Columbia, and five territories (American Samoa, Guam,
Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin
Islands) identified in the MSA with tobacco product
manufacturers
(http://www.naag.org/tobaccopublic/library.cfm). An Indian reservation, =
Indian tribe, or tribal organization located within the forty-six =
settling states or a non-governmental entity that serves such a =
reservation may also apply for funding.
Legacy will not award a grant to any applicant that is in
current receipt of any grant monies or in-kind contribution from any =
tobacco manufacturer, distributor,
or other tobacco-related entity.
See the Legacy Web site for complete funding guidelines
and to submit an online application.
