Many persons have had trouble with the photos I sent out of the annual
meeting of the Americqn Academy of Health Behavior which was held in
Napa (too big a file) so, we put them on the web. Go to the Academy web
site ( www.aahb.org ) and go to the last link called photos.
Have a good week.
Please excuse any cross postings.

Hello everyone,
My agency is in the process of conducting a summer teen tobacco survey. We
are surveying teens that smoke on their tobacco habits to better improve the
cessation services and education we offer. This survey is very grassroots -
we have 3 college interns pounding the pavement looking for teens that
smoke.
My question is - what is the best way to solicit business in our area
(malls, movie theaters, arcades with pool tables) to get them to give us
permission to survey the teens that frequent their business?
Any information would be helpful. Thanks!

One of my health educator colleagues is looking for professional
liability insurance. He was told by his insurance agent that such
insurance is much less expensive if purchased through a professional
organization. He contacted APHA, of which he is a member, but it's not
available through them. Do any of you know of another source?

Where can I find more information about Social Capital?
*
Nicolette,
Social capital is used somewhat differently in the education, business and
community development literature.
* A good community development website on social capital is at the world
bank's website: http://www.worldbank.org/poverty/scapital/
* There is also a great benchmark survey site with results from a large
survey effort from the community foundation of Silicon Valley at:
http://www.cfsv.org/communitysurvey/
* Robert Putnam made the concept "popular" with his book Bowling Alone see:
http://www.bowlingalone.com/
* If you are interested in the business application of social capital I
would suggest 2 books: The social life of information (Brown & Duguird) and
In good company (Cohen & Prusak).
Hope this helps

Lea, my first question is if you are conducting an anonymous survey and
are having the participants fill out an informed consent...this needs to
be done to protect the participant, even with survey research. The best
way that I can think of is going to the general manager of the movie
theaters, malls, ect. to ask permission to be on the property, without
the intent to purchase goods or go and see a movie yourself. Hope this
helps you out some.

I too use Forrest T.Jone, after a month long nationwide search. I
re-joined Phi Delta Kappa, which I was nominated too in graduate school.
You have to fill out a questionnaire about the types of work you will be
doing, and they will give you a list of professional organizations they
work with for you to join. About $200-250. a year for a $1milliion. plan I
believe. Good luck.

I had to post this one:
Last May the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) launched a new
campaign to warn parents that between 1999 through 2001 at least 180
children under the age of two died after being placed in adult beds and that
letting babies sleep in an adult bed was dangerous. This led to a flurry of
media coverage related to the "harmful" practice of "co-sleeping" where
babies and children sleep with their parents in the same bed. What is
interesting is the other side of the story:
"The May 6 announcement reported "more than 180 infant deaths in adult beds
in three years." That's 60 per year. According to the CPSC's own data, as
reported on the Consumers Union's website, 900 babies die each year in
cribs. Since 1988, 200 babies have died in playpens, portable cribs, or play
yards. Since the late 1970s, there have been 36 crib recalls, 24 car seat
recalls, and 21 stroller recalls. In fact, every major manufacturer of baby
equipment, including Evenflo, Hasbro (Playskool), Century Products, Baby
Bjorn, Cosco, Safety First, Mattel (Fisher-Price), and Kolcraft, have
recalled a product after babies have been seriously injured or killed. In
1999 alone, 65,000 children were rushed to emergency rooms with injuries
associated with infant products and hundreds died." See:
http://mothering.com/editorials/editorial113.shtml
Oh, the other piece of the story, is that the new campaign that CPSC
launched was conveniently announced in collaboration with the Juvenile
Products Manufacturers Association at the annual new products trade show.
It is amazing when you cross the business model of a smarmy manufacturing
association with the credibility of a public safety organization. I wonder
how many other public-private-prostitution acts we could name related to the
cause of public health (can anyone say drug companies and professional
associations?)
It is a sad day when health educators need to be vigilant and correct the
misinformation of our government health agencies.
