I know that the question of the CHES has been beat to death on the list,
but I am going to bring it up yet again.

As an undergrad, the importance of obtaining certification was stressed
by certain mentors in my prep program. I was excited to sit for the
test after graduation and thrilled to have obtained my certification.
Four years later I am looking at paying for the renewal of my
certification for another year and wondering if it is worth it. I
didn't mind in my previous position because my employer paid for any
certification that we held (that went for counselors, too...and since
they paid for counselor's certification it was only fair they pay for
mine). I am now in a position where I need to pay the bill myself. For
some reason, I always seem to be charged a reinstatement fee and a late
charge, although I had never seen a previous bill. So, I am looking at
a $155 fee for another year.

So far, I have not necessarily seen the value of the CHES. Of course I
am proud to have the certification and be able to say that I am in fact,
certified as a health educator. I have done as much self-study for
continuing education as I can, but I still have credits to go. None of
the positions that I have held have paid anymore or been any more
selective because I have a CHES. Many don't even know what it is. I DO
get irritated when everyone and their mother think they can be a health
educator, but it doesn't seem to bother the majority of the population.

So my question is...why bother keeping the certification?

Hello HEDIR-land. As acting executive director of NCHEC, of course I
have to respond to Jennifer's email.

First and foremost, I am very happy that Jennifer is proud of her
certification. I hope all of us CHES are proud of the certification and
for what it represents. I also hope we can encourage others to carry
the CHES.

With that said, and I've shared this information with Jennifer, she says
in her email that she has always gotten the late bill and a
reinstatement bill. That is not the case when I looked back at her
billing and payment history. Also, for this year's renewal, Jennifer's
address had changed and NCHEC did not have the new address on file and
the post office did not notify us of a change of address when we sent
the earlier bills.

It is the responsibility of all of us to inform all our professional
organizations and affiliations (like CHES/NCHEC) of our change of
address, otherwise we cannot be sure that our mail is sent properly.
And even though we'd like to be able to control, but we all know we
can't, we cannot assure the mail is delivered in a timely manner
(sometimes even ever!). However, NCHEC does use first class mail to
send our bills and CECU transcripts.

So if your address is not up-to-date in our files, or if you're not
sure, just send your correct address to Sandy Schlegel at our office.
Her email is sschlegel@nchec.org. We do not take address changes over
the phone, we must have it in writing -protects our you know what in
times just like this :) It could save you $100!

Other issues Jennifer addressed:
Availability of CHES credit offerings - I can assure you that the NCHEC
board has heard your previous concerns regarding this issue and we are
currently undergoing some very serious discussions in this regard. We
hope to have positive news to share with you within the next year.

Also, as a profession with a credential, we are making progress. We
know Arkansas requires CHES for applicants and New Jersey is currently
in the rule making process to do the same. What can each of us do to
advocate (at the very least to our current employers) that CHES be
required for anyone serving in a health educator capacity, at the very
least, those who are "health education supervisors." Not until we all
get together on this fight to recognize the credential and the degree
will we see a financial gain from it. But I truly believe it's coming
-- with the progress made in a few states, if we keep working on it,
we'll realize it for all states in the nation. But it's a process and
we (the profession, NCHEC and CHES) need all the able-body, active
voices we can get to advocate on this issue.

Also, it anyone has any gripes with NCHEC or CHES, I strongly encourage
you to give me a call or send me an email -- (317) 241-6387 or
kalley@smokefreeindiana.org. IF YOU REALLY WANT TO MAKE AN IMPACT WITH
CHES AND NCHEC, WE ARE CURRENTLY ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS FOR DIVISION
BOARD AND BOARD OF DIRECTOR POSITIONS. WE'VE EXTENDED THE DEADLINE TO
7/15 SO GET YOUR INFORMATION IN FAST. YOU CAN FIND THE NOMINATION FORMS
ON OUR WEBSITE AT www.nchec.org AND WE STRONGLY ENCOURAGE SELF
NOMINATIONS. I HOPE YOU WILL JOIN ME AND THE REST OF OUR BOARD MEMBERS
AS WE WORK TO IMPROVE CHES AND IMPROVE ALL WE'RE DOING AS CHES AND FOR
CHES!!!

Suddenly I feel as if I am in defense mode because I have been scolded
about not changing my address. For the record, I HAD changed my address
via the NCHEC website before I had even left my prior position. I
changed it the same day that I changed my Penn State Alumni Association
information and to date I have received everything from the Alumni
Association just fine. My address was changed WELL in advance of my
moving to my current residence.

Apparently Kelly had shared this information with me 1/2 an hour before
she sent an email to the entire list. I had neither read nor responded
to her mail sent to me privately since I was at lunch. It is beyond me
why anyone, especially an acting executive director would post various
details about a person's transactions with NCHEC, regardless of how
vague the details were or to scold someone in front of colleagues for
not changing an address.

>From the responses that I have gotten from this post, I am NOT the only
one questioning the CHES.

Jennifer

Kelly,

I am sorry to argue with you but your statement above is disingenuous at
best. Advocating for the requirement of a professional (read: dues based)
credential as a prerequisite for employment has no relationship to financial
gain except for NCHEC. Let's not confuse penalizing people for the absence
of a credential with rewarding people who possess a credential. They are
two VERY different concepts.

But I beg to differ - if we advocate for the profession and certain
standards, we as professional will have a leg to stand on when we start
demanding more money -- I don't think we're there yet :) That's how
professions get to the pay levels that they are - they advocate that if
you want the best of the best (and that is not meant to open a debate on
who's better, CHES or not) then you hire someone with X credentials or X
certifications. I equate this to CPA and now organizations might higher
more CPAs and are likely to pay CPAs more than non CPAs (also don't want
to get into a debate over CPAs). When those in our profession developed
the CHES and the organization to administer it, I'm sure that was part
of their vision for the profession. Then we all win.

It's all a process and we are in the growing phases. It's already taken
us a couple decades to get to this point and it's going to take a couple
more at least until we realize higher pay as professionals. But unless
we as a professional all work together to advocate for the advancement
of our profession (and our credential) we will not succeed.

Here are some suggestions for culture readings (a bit different, more
socio-cultural/anthropological, but worth the read):

highly influential)

Folks, I am returning to teaching a health behavior course after about an 8
year hiatus. This has come up very quickly, so I am somewhat behind the
curve getting everything ready for fall. The course is a core "social and
behavioral health" course for non-health promotion majors in our MPH
program. I am looking for a text book. It seems not much has changed over
the years. I have not been able to find a text that will provide
information on social psych theories and models witha bit of social ecology
and cultural health values thrown in. If you are using such a text or
something similar, I would appreciate hearing from you. Any suggestions are
welcome.

Thanks. Jim
