One excellent book that I used in my MPH program was
"Health Behavior and Health Education, Theory, Research, and Practice." 2nd
Edition
Glanz, K., Lewis, F.M., Rimer, B. (eds.)
1997
The book is easy to read and understand and the editors and authors do an
excellent job of explaining the theories. Definitely my most valued book in grad
school!

Here are some suggestions for culture readings (a bit different, more
socio-cultural/anthropological, but worth the read):
(I don't know about using one for the class, but passages from them would be
highly influential)
Mead, G.H., Mind, Self and Society. Chicago. University of Chicago Press.
1934
Lévi-Strauss, C. Nature of Culture. Boston: Beacon Press. 1969
Benedict, R, Patterns of Culture. Boston: Houghton Mifflin. 1934
Rosaldo & Lamphere. Woman, Culture, and Society. Stanford, CA: Stanford
University Press. 1973.
Fiske, J. (1989). Understanding Popular Culture. Boston: Unwin Hyman
Munch & Smelser, Theory of Culture.

Folks, I am returning to teaching a health behavior course after about an 8
year hiatus. This has come up very quickly, so I am somewhat behind the
curve getting everything ready for fall. The course is a core "social and
behavioral health" course for non-health promotion majors in our MPH
program. I am looking for a text book. It seems not much has changed over
the years. I have not been able to find a text that will provide
information on social psych theories and models witha bit of social ecology
and cultural health values thrown in. If you are using such a text or
something similar, I would appreciate hearing from you. Any suggestions are
welcome.
Thanks. Jim
