Greetings.

Starting on Friday, July 19 until Monday, July 29, for the first time in at
least 13 years, I will be out of touch with the world and not having access
to my computer. My good friend, Bruce Ragon and I will be participating in
the 30th annual riding of RAGBRAI (Register [Des Moine] Annual Great Bike
Ride Across Iowa). This is a 500 mile bike ride starting on the west end
of Iowa and ending on the east side consisting of over 15,000 bike
riders. It is considered one of the granddaddies of bike rides in the
US. It is also interesting because the route they select this year is
through northern Iowa, an area that I lived and taught my first two years
as a teacher.

Bruce and I have always said that we needed to ride it, and finally we
decided to do it this year. I believe there are some other HEDIR members
who will be participating (i.e., Lynda Ransdell from Utah).

The reason I am sending this memo is that I will not be able to manage the
HEDIR during this time. I will not be able to add people, modify
addresses, or delete individuals. I am sure I will have a long list of
people when I return and I'll get to them as quickly as possible. I
apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you but hey, what can I say?

The reason for sending this out to you is in the event you will be in
northern Iowa during July 21-27, look for me. I would love to see
you. I'll be wearing black biker shorts, a helmet, and riding a white
bike. You can't miss me.

Thanks for your understanding.

I've been in conversation with Mike Perko, Associate Professor at
University of North Carolina at Wilmington, about a book he has been
authoring. It's very timely. However, Mike is having some problems that I
thought I would share with the HEDIR. If you could help Mike, I would
appreciate it. Also, if this book is of interest to you...contact Mike
directly (perkom@uncwil.edu) and he'll send you some info (i.e., toc, preface)

General message:

I have written a book titled "Taking one for the team: the new thinking on
dietary supplements and young athletes," for a publishing company that
shall remain nameless at least for now. This book is a short primer on
influences on young athletes involving the decisions they make to take or
not take dietary and sport supplement products. It is based on thousands
of surveys I have collected on these athletes since 1998 and is intended
for health educators, athletic trainers, school physicians, nurses, AD's,
coaches, and parents. My survey instrument was based on the theory of
reasoned action and has some rich and completely new data on the
subject. And what better time than now with the media surrounding Baseball
and steroid use. My first chapter in fact revolves around the famous
homerun race between McGwire and Sosa. Anyway here's the problem: The
publishing company will not print the book, which is camera-ready and just
sitting there until I guarantee them that this book will be adopted by my
university. They will not print any books until I generate 1000 copies
being sold. I have approached each professor who teaches nutrition,
athletic training, PE-coaching and the like and they all said they would
agree to adopt. The problem is I can't come close to the 1000, even over
two semesters (plus, nowhere in my contract does it say I have to
'hardsell' this book to my colleagues). Since the company will not market
the book and will not let me do a press/media release since I can't
guarantee the book will be published, I am left to fend for myself. So I
am asking those of you who would be interested in this topic and would like
a supplement to your texts in this area to contact me. If we can convince
said publishing company to run a few advance copies if I can show them
interest I think it will be ok. Again this is not a plug, but a
first-time author learning the hard way.

Fellow HEDIRs,
I am looking for suggestions of web sites to which to post health education faculty positions. I know this question has been asked before but I was not paying close attention because it was not immediately relevant. I would appreciate suggestions and/or forwards from previous responses.

Thanks
Mark
