October is National Child Health Month and National SIDS Awareness Month.
Maybe you do something broad on children's health which can encompass infant
health (i.e., SIDS). We have a lot of free publications that you can use
for your event. Please visit our Web site: www.nichd.nih.gov

Keep in mind that the health fair is for a college
campus with a wide range of ages, but mostly late
teens to twenties.

There are many health observances all throughout the
year. For the complete list for 2002 go to
http://www.health.gov/nhic/pubs/nho.htm.

Too bad your health fair is not in the Spring, a good
focus during that semester is to encourage students to
have a safe and fun, but responsible Spring Break.
However, take advantage of students being new to the
area or just starting the semester.

A suggestion would be to educate students who may be
struggling with how to manage their new freedom, which
brings on additional stresses such as weight gain or
loss, abuse of alcohol and other drugs, etc. How many
of your students are completely new to the community?
Introduce them to health and social services as well
as volunteer opportunities to the surrounding area,
not just the college campus.

Best wishes,

Yes, the age ranges are wide but more and more Federal government programs
are trying to reach teens and young adults (even younger than teens too!).
It is best to teach them at a young age with these messages, not only for
future reference but also for the present. A lot of college students
babysit part time to make a few extra bucks. We are definitely are trying
to reach babysitters with our messages regarding SIDS.
The younger we teach them, the more likely they will practice these
behaviors later.

I do not expect behavior change from someone attending a health fair and
picking up some information. Nor do I expect that everyone will go home and
read the information cover to cover. However, I do think that attending
them will stimulate and increase awareness to a certain degree. From a
personal experience, some people stop by my booth/table out of curiosity if
they have never heard of the Back to Sleep campaign (or SIDS) or they have
heard of it but never really knew what it was all about. There are a lot of
people that may know someone expecting a baby (mom, dad, sibling,
aunt/uncle, grandparent, neighbor, etc.) or just had a baby or is going to
have one herself (or maybe his wife is). A health fair can be so
inexpensive to do nowadays (especially since many materials from the Federal
government is free of charge) and it can be really fun. People will come by
and even if you get their attention for a minute, you will still have had
exposure. With the Back to Sleep campaign, we are trying to generate a
"buzz" about SIDS in black communities. The way we do it is to at least
have people exposed to the term "SIDS" or more commonly known as "crib
death." We hope to have these buzz words generating everywhere in
communities - barber shops, grocery stores, churches, senior centers, etc. -
similar to the concept of "water cooler talk."

This will probably generate all kinds of flames, but why are we doing health
fairs? Are there expectations that something is going to change as a result
of a 5-30 minute exposure to some health message?

I can understand health fairs as a marketing tool to increase awareness
about services. However, I think we need to be a bit realistic about the
benefits/effects of them.

I would suggest that you contact Bowling Green State Unviersity Health
Services. They do a well run and well attended, annual thematic health fair
in April. Venders particpate to varying degrees with the theme, but the
health services people do a great job setting the scene.
