FYI. Colleen
**National Bullying Prevention Campaign
The Maternal and Child Health Bureau is launching a campaign to prevent =
bullying among "tweens" (kids from 9 to 13) as part of the Center for =
Disease Control's National Youth Media Campaign. The campaign aims to
prevent and reduce bullying behaviors, identify and provide appropriate =
interventions and foster linkages between the public health system and =
other partners. To learn more, email Stephanie Bryn (sbryn@hrsa.gov) or
Jason Smith (jason.smith@widmeyer.com).

**A Community Approach to the Prevention of Violence by Youth
Boston's successful community response to reducing gun violence among =
its youth in the early 90s has become almost legendary. This "best =
practices" brief from Michigan State University outlines how the =
dedication of a few effective leaders, improved opportunities and =
services for youth, and shifting roles of police, clergy and community =
agencies contributed to Boston's success.

**Teens, Sex and TV
A survey of 15- 17-year-olds finds that most think sexual content on TV =
influences the behavior of kids their age, but only 1 in 4 think it =
influences their own behavior. On a positive note, many teens say they
have found sexual scenes on TV helpful in learning how to say no to a =
sexual situation that makes them uncomfortable and, to a lesser extent, =
how to talk to a partner about safer sex.

**"Get Real, Let Kids Get Informed and Stay Safe" Ads Launched=20
A little known provision in the current welfare reform reauthorization =
legislation would extend funding for "abstinence-unless-married" =
education programs that prohibit teaching about contraception, except to =
talk about failure rates. The National Family Planning and Reproductive =
Health Association, with the support of the mainstream medical =
community, is launching public awareness ads to bring attention to the =
potential dangers
of withholding accurate information about disease and pregnancy =
prevention from teens.

**Back-to-School 2002 Action Kits
Kids may be looking forward to getting out of school, but community =
leaders are already beginning to plan for Back-to-School campaigns to =
help parents enroll their kids in SCHIP or Medicaid health insurance =
programs.
