Nominations Sought for Community Health Leadership
Awards
Deadline: September 30, 2002 (Letter of intent)


Each year, the Robert Wood Johnson Community Health Leadership Program =
(CHLP) honors ten outstanding individuals who have overcome long odds to =
expand access to health care and social services to underserved and =
isolated populations in communities across the United States. Each =
honoree is awarded $120,000 -- $105,000 for program support and
$15,000 as a personal stipend.

To be eligible, candidates must be in "mid-career," with
at least five and no more than fifteen years of community
health experience; working full-time at the grassroots
level in their own local community (not on a national or
international level); and have not received national
recognition. To be eligible, candidates also must be
citizens or permanent residents of the United States,
Washington D.C., or Puerto Rico.

leaders, health professionals, and government officials who have been =
personally inspired by a nominee.

Grants Available to Improve Quality of Life for
Individuals with Multiple Sclerosis=20
Deadline: October 1, 2002


The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation annually offers Brighter Tomorrow =
grants to help meet the needs of individuals with multiple sclerosis =
across the United States.


The grant program is designed to improve the quality of
life of individuals with MS by providing goods or services (valued at up =
to $1,000 per recipient) that enhance their safety, self-sufficiency, =
comfort, and/or well-being. Recipients of Brighter Tomorrow grants have =
received car repairs, ramps, wheelchairs, walkers, eyeglasses, =
computers, appliances, televisions, furniture, therapeutic equipment, =
hobby supplies, retreats, and various home modifications.


To qualify for a grant, applicants must be 18 years of age
or older, a permanent U.S. resident, and be diagnosed with MS (or the =
parent of a minor child diagnosed with MS). In addition, applicants must =
not have any other means of fulfilling their request.

American Association for Cancer Research and the
Cancer Research Foundation of America Announce
New Award in Cancer Prevention Research=20
Deadline: August 1, 2002


The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and the Cancer =
Research Foundation of America (CRFA) have announced the creation of a =
major international award in recognition of outstanding cancer =
prevention research. The AACR-CRFA Award for Excellence in Cancer =
Prevention Research will be given to a scientist residing in any country =
in the world for seminal contributions in basic, translational, =
clinical, epidemiological, or behavioral science investigations in =
cancer prevention research that have had a major impact on and =
stimulated new directions in the field.


The winner of the AACR-CRFA Award will present a major lecture during =
the first AACR Frontiers in Cancer
Prevention Research Meeting, which will be held October 14-18, 2002, in =
Boston, Massachusetts. The awardee will receive an honorarium of $5,000 =
and a commemorative plaque, as well as support for travel and related =
expenses to attend the meeting.


The award is open to all cancer researchers who are
affiliated with a research institution anywhere in the
world. Candidates will be considered on the basis of their seminal =
contributions to cancer prevention research and the impact of those =
discoveries on advancing the field. Candidates must currently maintain =
an active research program, have a record of recent publication, and be =
in a position to present the award lecture at the meeting.


Nominations may be made by any scientist who is affiliated with any =
research institution whose work relates to cancer research or =
cancer-related biomedical research. Candidates may not nominate =
themselves.

Social Science Research Council Accepting Applications
for Dissertation Fellowship in Philanthropy and the
Nonprofit Sector
Deadline: December 2, 2002


The Social Science Research Council's (SSRC) Program on Philanthropy and =
the Nonprofit Sector, which offers various opportunities for graduate =
students in the social sciences and humanities to work on issues =
concerning philanthropy and the nonprofit sector, is accepting =
applications for its annual dissertation fellowship competition.


Fellowships will provide support for dissertation research on the =
history, behavior, and role of nonprofit and/or philanthropic =
organizations in the United States. Up to seven fellowships of $18,000 =
each will be awarded to graduate students in the social sciences and =
humanities to apply their knowledge of the theories and methods of their =
disciplines to issues concerning philanthropy and the nonprofit sector =
in the United States.


Full-time graduate students in the social sciences and
humanities are eligible to apply. Students must be
enrolled in a doctoral program in the United States and
conducting research on the U.S., although proposals that
identify countries outside the United States as cases
for comparative inquiry are also welcome. There are no
citizenship requirements and applications from women and persons of =
color are especially encouraged. Applicants must have completed all =
requirements for the Ph.D. except the research component, including an =
approved dissertation prospectus, by April 15, 2003.


Fellowships generally will provide maintenance support for ten to twelve =
months. The fellowship must be held in one consecutive period and must =
be completed by December 2004.
