Robin,
Obviously, the risk in a particular case would depend on the genotype of the
particular cousins, just as it would with any other pairing. Contrarty to
popular belief, the risk of a genetic problem in a child born to cousins is not
in general significantly greater than that for a child born to unrelated
parents. It is only in societies or families (such as the royal families of many
cultures down through the ages) where incest has been common over multiple
generations that risks begin to build up to an extent that makes genetic
abnormailities highly more likely than in non-incestuous populations. Laws
against cousin marriages are based on religious/moral belief and misinformation,
not on actual risks.

Dear Eric:
I have been an international student myself for 10 years but I have not
participated in any sexual violence program offered on campus while I was a
student. I am happy to see that someone is targeting especially the
international students for such an important public health issue. I think it
will be difficult to tailor your program according to the various ethnicities
and religions, because there is so much variation. On the other hand, I think
all of international students understand the concept of sexual violence and
would like to learn more about it. I have two recommendations for you. Make sure
your audience understands the concepts/terminology you will be using; this might
be especially important if you are targeting freshman students, so find out how
many of your audience are newcomers or "older" students . Also I think it will
be useful to meet with a small group of international students representing the
major cultural and religious groups before your presentation. Share your ideas
with them and ask for their ideas as well and what will be useful for them to
learn in such a presentation.
Good luck!

Hi,
just a quick thank you to all of you who responded with information
about cousins and birth defects. My 8th grade students learned two
lessons...
they got the info they wanted on the cousins and they were very amazed
and impressed by how quickly so many people responded to my question.
"Teachers are sure nice to each other" was their overall mpression.
I agree, the Health community is the best!
have a great summer,

One of my health educator colleagues is looking for professional
liability insurance. He was told by his insurance agent that such
insurance is much less expensive if purchased through a professional
organization. He contacted APHA, of which he is a member, but it's not
available through them. Do any of you know of another source?
