Hello all, The infamous "joke" speaks more about the cynical nature of HMO's
(but I don't know
why the victim is named "Mrs. Lard"?) and I have not seen as many flying,
passtionate, e-mails of
late. My concerns extend to other topics:

--Potential war with Iraq, lead by one of the most inarticulate Presidents of
all time, who
has the highest mid-term rating than any other (go figure);

--Potential mass innoculation of smallpox vaccine handled on the local level by
someone (knowing my local health dept.), whose professional preparation
was as a personal fitness
trainer (this is really scary!);

--Intrusion of privacy, switch to guns vs. butter economy (ok I'm dating
myself)

Any takers?

Well. I think the discussion on certification is "junk," and ridiculous. It
has filled up my mailbox for days now. It's older than my "lucky socks" and
underwear (whew)! The issue has been going on for decades, and now we're
spending weeks talking about it! If that "ain't" junk mail, I don't know
what is!
Where are the "professional organizations" in all of this. What is their
position. Aren't folks from those groups on this list server?
Where were they when, for example, I faced Deans and school presidents
defending the CHES-oriented enhancements to health education teacher
certification (increasing it 22 hours, form 11) in Louisiana? You know where
they were....in brief, behind physical education and physical educators
fearing loss of control! I've been in those trenches as well, and, well,
it's hell!
Problem to REALLY discuss: SOPHE won't touch it, AAHE is driven by an
alliance with physical educators, ACHA is mostly interested in college
health education, and so forth....all of them forgetting the big picture: it
is ALL CONNECTED; when you fail to raise hell as a profession together, you
fail the profession, whether it is out of your "special interest" or
specialty! When school health education is taught by physical educators
because the Superintendents won the battle over requiring certified
teachers, you have no right to complain when an unqualified nurse gets the
job with a job description that sounds like the roles and responsibilities
of a health educator.
Instead of dealing with it, coming up with solutions (revamping professional
organizations to PROTECT OUR TURF!), we whine and talk about it. Junk mail?
I would rather read a good joke!
So, there......
Michael
PS: Thanks for the comment and the opportunity to whine.

OK boys and girls. We've had a lot of fun... :)
First, as you know, nothing is censored on the HEDIR...I will not be put in
that position...nor will I ask anybody else. Second, with over 1300
participants it's virtually impossible for something to be posted that
won't offend somebody...whether it's about CHES certification, health and
politics, or humor. I do ask that people use the subject line to identify
what the memo is about...especially when one replies to a message about a
particular topic. That way people can use the delete button accordingly.
Second, and perhaps more importantly, is that the HEDIR serves more than
just a tool for dissemination. It's a community. Much like when one
attends a state or national conference, people talk and share ideas. Most
of that talk tends to focus on professional issues, but it's also true that
people share personal stories...jokes....other topics of interest. If
you're at those meetings and you don't want to hear these people talk about
these things, one leaves or tunes out their conversation. The same goes
with the HEDIR. Can't tell you how many times the HEDIR has been used to
share news (bad and good) about the health of somebody....how people have
been able to rally around an issue...it's probably not measurable how many
people have asked for assistance only to be flooded with ideas and
help. If you see somebody's post and you don't like them...delete it (you
can also configure your email to 'filter' out certain individuals). If you
see a topic that isn't appropriate, then delete it. If you feel compelled
to send the person a private email that's fine. On the other hand it's
also appropriate to send it over the HEDIR.
Several years ago Andy Jenkins would send out a Friday inspiration. Andy
clearly labeled it as such, so people who didn't want to read it could
delete it from their email. Andy has taken a sabbatical from doing this,
but the concept goes to all.
I don't know of too many other health education listservs that provide so
much for its viewers...you have truly made this a most professional
list. There are times that there are posts that aren't related to health
education per sae...but as a community it's important to realize that we
are more than just professionals. We are human beings, teachers, family
members, parents ... all of which makes us who we are.
I'm not sending this memo to stop discussions, but just a gentle reminder
on what this list is about. MP has had a number of other issues in his
follow-up memos that are of most interest. Perhaps we can move away from
the appropriateness of jokes and onto other issues.
Oh, by the way, if you want to hear a really good joke about health
insurance, send me an email....it's too rank to post on the HEDIR! :)

I think some of you who are tech-inclined might be interested in the
following journal issue:
JOURNAL OF HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY SPECIAL ISSUE
E-Health: Technology - Mediated Health Communication (Volume 8 Issue 1
January 2003)
Guest Edited by Gary L. Kreps
Ph.D. Chief, Health Communication and Informatics Research Branch,
National Cancer Institute.
This special issue of the Journal of Health Psychology addresses the
rapidly changing the nature of health care and health promotion in the
current e-health revolution. The articles illustrate the diversity of new
e-health applications and their potential for achieving important health
goals.
The papers are organized into three groups. The first provides overviews
and analyses of e-health applications, the second develop and apply
criteria for evaluating e-health programs and the final set describes the
development and evaluates the effectiveness of several unique new e-health
programs.
