Well, Mark, once again you have shown us the light and reiterated why the HEDIR
is the
best professional listserv around. It is truly a professional
community. To that end, I
want to thank all of you who responded to my question about medical benefits for
domestic
partners. Thanks, in large part to the information that I received from my HEDIR
colleagues, I believe I have convinced the key swing vote on my school board.
The
official vote is on November 14th, so I'll hold my breath until then. But
I couldn't have
even gotten this far without you!
By the way, have you heard the one about......? :-))

Good Morning All,
I know this has been asked before- please forgive the sleepy Health =
Educator.=20
I am searching for teen pregnancy prevention curricula/programs (that =
work) so that I may put together a packet of information to distribute =
at upcoming School Board meetings. I have a few ideas so far, but would =
like input from others who have jumped into the fray in this area. I =
remember some discussion about the programs being pulled off the CDC =
website and.. that would be correct. I can't find much on the CDC =
website for this issue.=20
Thanks very much!=20

DEADLINE: MARCH 1, 2003
THE CALIFORNIAN JOURNAL OF HEALTH PROMOTION
CALL FOR MANUSCRIPTS/MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATIONS
THEME: MEXICAN AMERICAN HEALTH AND HEALTH EDUCATION IN CALIFORNIA
The second issue of the Californian Journal of Health Promotion will be
devoted to Mexican American Health and Mexican American Health Education.
Both California and Beyond California manuscripts and multimedia
presentations are sought in the areas of Practice, Research, Theory, and
Reflections on the Health Educator Experience. Those wanting to submit
manuscripts/multimedia presentations outside of this theme are welcomed to
do so. Those items will be included in Issue 3.
Of particular interest are articles on Border Health, Migrant Health, Farm
Worker Health. Mexican American health educators are encouraged to submit
manuscripts for the Health Educator Experience of Mexican American health
educators.
Community organizations are encouraged to submit manuscripts about their
individual programs serving this community. Of particular interest are
manuscripts and multimedia presentations from organizations along the
Mexican-USA border.
Many health educators will be interested in review/summary articles to bring
us up-to-date on Mexican American health and health education programs for
this community. A case study of your individual health education program
for this community needs to be heard! Also, summaries of grant
making
programs and information about foundations and other not-for-profit
organizations dedicated to raising money to promote the health of the
Mexican American community are desired for this issue.
State and county health departments are encouraged to submit manuscripts
discussing the health status and health education programs in their county
or state for the Mexican-American community. It is important to include
your county and state in this second issue of CJHP. Don't be left out!
Coalitions and Partnerships to promote the health of the Mexican American
community need to inform readers about your advocacy efforts. Your voices
need to be heard!
College and school health educators are being asked to submit manuscripts
and other materials related to Mexican American programming and curricula
specific to this population, including lesson plans, handouts, flyers,
exercises, etc., in English and Spanish (attached as Appendices). Lesson
plans teaching other children about the Mexican American culture are of
special interest.
Review/summary articles related to immigration issues, human rights, USA and
Mexican laws, environmental issues along the Mexican-USA border area are
greatly desired. Migrant and farm worker health and health education
programs are not well understood nor publicized, and CJHP readers will
appreciate submissions in these areas!
Readers of CJHP will be interested in reading about Mexican American mental,
social, and spiritual health. Social health manuscripts of the Mexican
American community may discuss the rich and wonderful culture that this
group has brought to the USA. Articles on how Mexican and Mexican American
food, music, art, and dance have contributed to the social health of this
specific community and the American community are greatly desired. Much
regarding the social health of the Mexican American community is positive
and encouraging, and these areas need to be highlighted in this CJHP issue.
Join us this summer for this very special issue.

Fellow HEDIRs,
I am trying to take Robert Bensley up on his invitation to attend the Second
Annual South
African National Wellness Conference titled, Wellness: New Strategies for
Investing in
Health to be held in March 2003. I'm hoping to create a relationship
between my PE,
Health and Leisure Service Department and the University of Port Elizabeth as
well as
local health agencies.
Travel is money is very tight at my little university so I am seeking outside
grants. Do
any of you more well-travelled faculty have any suggestions for me to
investigate in terms
of federal and private grants for travel expenses?
So far I've already investigated the Fulbright programs.
You may send your replies to me directly or to the list if you feel others may
benefit
from the info.
Thanks in advance.

Hello:
I'm trying to estimate my sample size for my dissertation. I am
planning to use an in-class convenience sample, and wondered if
anyone had refusal rates for classroom samples. People there, but
refuse to take it.
My study deals with sexual health issues, so if you have those
numbers, that would be great, but anything on refusal rates from in-
class college samples would be a helpful baseline.
I've done a lit search and couldn't find anything similar so any info
you can provide would be most helpful. Thanks so much.

And for those who want to say, in effect that, "the world (or society)
doesn't let us," implying that we are trapped or that passion is not
enough... whatever happened to that internal locus of control? The world
doesn't need to just happen to us.
----------
Thud. I guess that is the sound of silence.
It is a whole lot easier to write about certification than about passion.
Perhaps this alone is an indicator that we are all long overdue in
re-reading Alinsky and Freire. Or perhaps it is time that we read some
contemporary books like the Silent Takeover by noreena Hertz or Fast Food
Nation by Eric Schlosser or Food Politics by Marion Nestle or Affluenza by
John De Graaf, et al or the Monkey Wrench Gang by Edward Abbey...
By the way, speaking of passion. I hope we all remember that passion is best
expressed by exercising our right to vote. No lobbying here but if we
don't
vote, we should change professions. imho

During our Spring 2001 sexual health survey, we utilized convenience
sampling in randomized classrooms. Less than 10% declined participation
in the survey. However, that number included those who declined because
they had already completed the questionnaire in another class. You can

I am on my Soapbox!
How many professional organizations do health educators need? I, for one, would
like to
see one that works well. If we, as health educators, with our focus on change in
behaviors, can't change the way we divide ourselves into, somewhat self-serving,
organizations, how can we change the rest of the world?
I have, in the past, belonged to two "chapters" of one of the national HE
organizations,
one on the east coast dominated by academic types and one in the mid-west
dominated by
state department of health employees. Either way, those of us in the trenches
may develop
the sense that we are underserved (or, perhaps, undervalued) by our professional
organization(s). I stongly suspect that, however, we make up the majority of
those in the
profession.
