99 Tips for Family Fitness Fun
WIDELY POPULAR BROCHURE
NOW IN SPANISH
RESTON, VA, November 19, 2002 - With high incidents of obesity among the
Hispanic population, the National Association for Sport and Physical
Education (NASPE) hopes to educate those families about the importance and
enjoyment of physical activity through its newly translated brochure, "99
Consejos Divertidoes para una Familia en Forma." Funded by the American
Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), it
is NASPE's latest advocacy initiative to encourage physical activity among
all ages.
An article in the July issue of the Journal of the American Medical
Association reported that the
nation's surging population of Hispanic children has a disproportionate
share of asthma, obesity
and other health problems that are not being adequately treated. According
to the author, Dr. Glenn Flores of Boston Medical Center, "if the
disparities continue it has the potential to affect the health and
productivity and well-being of our entire nation."
Over the past year (NASPE) has disseminated over 250,000 copies of the
brochure in English. It
features positive messages regarding the important role families play in
getting people of all ages
physically active and has been very well-received. In fact, the September
15th edition of Parade
Magazine, with a 73 million circulation, featured the brochure in its
fitness column. The brochure
is also widely used at Back to School Nights, health fairs, PTA events,
School Board Meetings
and has been distributed to every member of the U.S. Congress.
Among the recommendations in the brochure are suggestions that parents
schedule a regular time throughout the week for their family to do a
physical activity, select fitness-oriented gifts this holiday season and
reward children with an activity rather than food. Tips for "fitness fun"
are grouped for home, kitchen, school, the great outdoors, your own
backyard, and much more.
"We also want parents to examine their children's physical education
programs and to urge schools to provide adequate, safe, and effective
education about physical activity to their children," said NASPE President
Kim Graber, Ph.D., of the University of Illinois, Urbana/Champaign. "Every
student in our nation's schools from kindergarten through grade 12 should
have the opportunity to participate in a quality physical education program.
Children need to be taught the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to
lead healthy, active and productive lives. To do that, all programs must
facilitate achievement of the National Standards for Physical Education."
To receive a free copy of "99 Tips for Family Fitness Fun," send a
stamped-self addressed legal size (#10) envelope to: National Association
for Sport and Physical Education, 1900 Association Drive, Reston, VA 20191.
For bulk purchases in Spanish and English, call NASPE Publications at
1-800-321-0789, ext. 460.
Information about the National Association for Sport and Physical
Education (NASPE) can be found on the Internet at www.aahperd.org, the web
site of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation &
Dance (AAHPERD). NASPE is the largest of AAHPERD's six national
associations. A nonprofit membership organization of over 25,000
professionals in the fitness and physical activity fields, NASPE is the only
national association dedicated to strengthening basic knowledge about sport
and physical education among professionals and the general public. Putting
that knowledge into action in schools and communities across the nation is
critical to improved academic performance, social reform and the health of
individuals.
