Dear HEDIRites-
Does anyone have an idea of acceptable return or response rates for mailed
surveys? I am having difficulty finding published articles using Medline and
various psychology databases.
Thank you in advance,

In Cincinnati, we developed the "Step It Up" walking program for employers.
It's an individualized walking program that is designed to help individuals
increase their daily activity levels through increasing the number of steps
they take each day. A pedometer and manual ($10.00) are provided for each
participate and the employer gets 8 weeks of e-mails, flyers, survey to
help them implement the program at their site. If you want more specific
information, I would be happy to speak to you or your contact person. This
program has been a huge hit!

I am interested in finding out if anyone has done any research about the
effectiveness of measured walk routes at worksites in promoting walking by
employees that had not previously shown any interest in walking as a form
of physical activity. What additional supports do employees seem to need to
motivate them to use existing measured walk routes? What types of workers
does this type of intervention work for and what type just ignores the
existance and the other motivational efforts? What works? What does not
work?
Thanks.

Perhaps I asked the question wrong. I work for a county agency. We have two
campuses and several off-site work locations. We have developed measured mile
courses at a number of the sites, but they need to be remarked about every 3
years. I know how to sponsor a short term walking challenge program and we
periodically provide an incentivized walk program.
My office overlooks one of the walk routes. I do not think this walk route gets
anything near the usage that warrants the time and expense put into an
incentivized program. Our goal is to promote lifelong behavior change. The
walking stops when the incentives stop except for those few people who would
walk without the incentive.
I am interested in knowing about the long term effectiveness of developing
measured walk routes at worksites. I know how to run a short term support
program to get people to walk. I want to know if the results of that short term
(and often expensive) program pays off in the end.
I am just not convinced that previous sedentary people change long term behavior
based on a short term incentivized walk program. How many people start an
incentivized walk program only to stop walking within say, 6 weeks, 6 months, or
after a spell of poor weather? How many walk routinely after one year?
And how many people out of a defined group do not need an incentivized program
to use a walk route once a measured mile or so course is marked and publicized?
Thanks.
