Dear Fellow HEDIR's -

In light of some recent posts regarding the political
climate in this country right now, I've decided to
forward this message.

For those of you who may not be familiar with Michael
Moore's work - he is an author, filmmaker from
Michigan, near where I grew up. His film "Roger & Me"
dealt with GM; he also created the television shows
"TV Nation"(NBC) and "The Awful Truth" (Bravo).

I saw his new film "Bowling for Columbine" this Monday
at the Chicago Film Festival. It is funny at times,
as well as scary, emotional, overwhelming at times.
It examines the American culture of violence from many
different angles. I will give you a heads up, there
are some very intense scenes at times - in one part of
the film, the video camera footage from the cafeteria
of Columbine High School on the day of the shooting is
shown. And there are other scenes of violence from
around the world shown also.

However, I left the sold-out theater with feelings of
hope - perhaps if we can educate enough people, and
create awareness of all the factors contributing to
the violence in this country - perhaps we can begin to
elicit a change, a shift in the culture. As health
educators, this is the task we undertake with so many
health issues.

I do think that this film should be required viewing
for all Americans right now, and from that viewing,
they can make up their own minds about many of the
issues raised by this film. I encourage you to attend
a screening if it opens in your city.

Sincerely,

Kristin Hartsaw, BS, CHES

If this is anything like the previous two it will be a GREAT conference....
=======
The American Academy of Health Behavior would like to announce its third
annual scientific meeting in St. Augustine, Florida in March 2003.

The Academy is committed to putting on an excellent meeting with nationally
known speakers, critical topics, great opportunities to network ..... and
all in an intimate meeting setting (only 150 attendees) at a resort-type
location. This year, we have once again put together a wonderful slate of
speakers and topics. We have also added some interesting breakfast
roundtables and professional development opportunities in the afternoon.
The local conference co-chairs are working on afternnon activities and
group dinners (small groups) for those of you who are interested. Please
plan to join us for our first "east coast" meeting site in sunny Florida,
the perfect place to be in March (when half the country is under snow and
ice).
Registration fees are lowest until November 30, 2002 so please register
early. You may register for both the conference and the hotel online at:
http://www.aahb.org

If you cannot join us this year, please join us in 2004 in Sedona, Arizona
and 2005 in Charleston, South Carolina. We are already working on the
programs for those upcoming meetings. Hope to see you in March........

Where are the Border Lines at Your School?
Take a Look Around - in the cafeteria, in the bleachers, in the
auditorium, in the teachers' lounge. How do people group themselves?
What defines your comfort zone? How fluid are the boundaries between
groups?
On November 21st, 2002, schools nationwide are going to shake up the
status quo. Mixitup at Lunch Day is the first step in a year-round,
nationwide exploration that will take place in schools and online across
all boundaries. Be a part of it.

5 Ways to Mixitup at Lunch:
* Label tables by months and sit according to your birthday
* Number tables and draw assignments from a jar at the cashier station
* Mark disposable cups with sticker dots and congregate by color
* Find a table where you don't know the names of at least two people
* Give each person a "ticket" that matches the color tag on a chair

For more information on what you can do at your school see the Teaching
Tolerance Web site at: www.mixitup.org

CHHCS News Alert 10/10/02

AMA Journal Seeks Papers on Obesity:
Asking why, during a time when the amount of research activity,
knowledge, and interest in obesity among the medical community, as well
as the level of public attention to the issues of weight, diet, and
exercise have never been greater, the epidemic of obesity continues
virtually unabated with no sign of reversal, the Journal of the American
Medical Association is joining its related publication, Archives of
Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, in devoting an entire issue to
obesity research in spring 2003.

PS: For those attending the SOPHE conference in Philadelphia next month, I
will be offering an evening workshop on Nov. 7 for health educators on how
to organize walking programs in community, business and school settings.
Will also be participating in an obesity pre-conference workshop and a
physical activity concurrent sesson at the conference.
