external funding commensurate with appointment at the rank of a tenured full professor;

ability to articulate a vision of the department;
· Demonstrated record of fund raising, grant writing or other
entrepreneurial activity generating external support;

planning skills;
· Evidence of ability to mentor students and faculty; and
· Evidence of commitment to the principles of equal opportunity

*Responsibilities:* The chair (1) provides leadership and support to all academic degree programs in the department; (2) fosters the scholarly productivity and visibility of a diverse and active faculty; (3) serves as a strong advocate for the department's mission in the college, on the university campus, and with outside agencies; (4) provides strong fiscal management and planning; and (5) mentors and supports external research and development funding efforts. Chairs in the college are expected to maintain their own programmatic line of research and to teach a minimum of one course a year.
