I throw out a simple question. Is there an enterprising soul or = organization
interested in sponsoring a conference on the role of health = education/health
promotion in the 9/11 era? Is there a need?
With our emphasis on prevention and "doing good" that HEHP could do = much. I
leave it at that.

Actually, the Illinois SOPHE Chapter is currently exploring this topic as a
regional continuing education offering for 2005. If anyone out there already has
developed training materials and/or knows Health Education speakers who have
outlined some of the role of HEHP in the Bioterrorism/All Hazard realm, those
resources would be helpful to our chapter.

Given the political context of the conversation on HEDIR this past week, maybe
there should be consideration given to forming three branches of HEDIR. HEDIR-C
could be for conservatives, HEDIR - L for liberals, and HEDIR - M for Moderates.
I am obviously being purposely foolish and absurd here. The exchange of views
from the entire political spectrum of HEDIR is healthy and productive. We should
encourage dialogue of opposing views rather than stifle the conversation with
censorship or restriction of topics for discussion. We all have the ability to
hit the delete button if we find the dialogue too political in nature for our
respective comfort levels. While on occasion I may not agree with some opinions
shared on HEDIR, I do enjoy listening to diverse points of view and respect
those whom offer their perspectives on politically sensitive topics. May
"freedom of speech and expression" continue on HEDIR!

Fern -
The absolute BEST and most comprehensive guide on writing, evaluating and
adapting print materials is one published by the Health Care Financing
Administration titled "Writing and Designing Print Materials," 1999. It is one
of the ONLY guides that I have found which actually gives specific guidelines
for establishing cultural and linguistic relevance of materials. I use it in my
graduate methods course. HCFA was giving it out free for many years, but stopped
doing so as of last year, I believe. I would still contact them to get even a
black and white copy of the guide (which they DID send out to my students last
year).
The other definitive resource is the Doak, Doak, and Root book, "Teaching
Patients with Low Literacy Skills," 2002, Lippincott. It has many basics of
materials development and evaluation such as readability assessment, materials
structure and design, pretesting, etc. This is one of my professional practice
"bibles."
Hope these help and best wishes wityh your efforts!

In the information age we can all personally tailor the majority of our
information inputs to hear what we want to hear from "credible" sources, then
act shocked when another person does not ape our "informed" views.
How many CDC programs (i.e. programs that work, etc.) have been undermined by
political ideologies?
How many local programs have been undermined, subverted or eliminated?
Are there core public health/health promotion/health education values that are
foundational to our field?
Do we collectively adhere to this values to further the field?
Or are we to twist in the political winds from generation to generation?

Treating Nicotine Dependence
Presented by
Dr. Elbert Glover
West Virginia University School of Medicine Alliance Scholar 2004-2005
The pharmacological action of nicotine is considered to be the primary factor in
maintaining the tobacco addiction. Moreover, smokers would not smoke if it were
not for nicotine and the accompanying surge of dopamine in the brain. Therefore,
a brief review of the biology of addiction and the addictive potential of
nicotine will precede the larger discussion on the latest management options for
treating nicotine dependence. Also to be discussed is the rationale behind
treating nicotine dependence with emphasis on nicotine replacement products and
bupropion SR. The U.S. Food and Drug Administrations' (FDA) approved
pharmacological therapies will be reviewed ie, nicotine polacrilex (2 & 4mg),
nicotine transdermal patches, the nicotine nasal spray, the nicotine inhaler,
the nicotine lozenge, and bupropion SR. Finally, a brief discussion on future
treatments currently in the research pipeline, specifically, the drug rimonabant,
a new antagonist .
Learning Objectives
I. Identify the role nicotine plays in the addiction of tobacco.
2. Identify the management options for treating nicotine dependence.
3. Describe the management options for treating nicotine dependence.
4. Describe the future adjuncts for treating nicotine dependence.
