The National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE)is pleased to announce the release of Part III of "Fit, Healthy, and Ready to
Learn: A School Health Policy Guide." This latest installment focuses on policies related to asthma management, school health services, and healthy school environments. It was developed with the support of CDC's Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) and the input of 37 medical and educational experts.

The 80-page guide addresses a wide range of topics including education programs, preparation of individual health plans for students, school health services organization and staffing, tobacco-free schools, integrated pest management, and other aspects of maintaining healthy school environments. At the heart of the new guide is best-practice sample policy language that states, school districts, and schools are encouraged to adapt or revise to fit their local circumstances. The sample policy language for this and the previous parts of "Fit, Healthy, and Ready to Learn" are online at www.nasbe.org/HealthySchools.

The publication also includes data and research findings; notable quotations; excerpts from exemplary state and local policies; extensive lists of key technical assistance resources; a policy checklist; and summaries of current state policies collected in NASBE's online state school health policy database.

"Fit, Healthy, and Ready to Learn, Part III: Policies on Asthma, School Health Services, and Healthy Environments" is available by calling (800)
220-5183 or via the Internet at www.nasbe.org.

Hello,

I have been researching peer visitor support for stoke patients and their families. We have been asked by our local stroke support group to evaluate if this is an option for our facility. If you have a group, will you please send me information. I really need assistance with these areas:

* policies for referral

* training of volunteers

* HIPPA and confidentiality

* group organization

Thanks in advance for your help.
Kelly

Hi Kelly,

I run a senior peer volunteer program for NYC. We have seniors who visit the frail elderly with the mission of preventing social isolation. One of the services we provide is friendly visiting.

Take a look at www.seniorcorps.org and see if there is a Senior Companion Program in your area, or an RSVP program. Of course, this only works if your patients are also seniors.

Thanks!

Jody

As most of you know Andy Jenkins had a serious injury this past spring.
While his recovery is going great he is still not able to communicate as well as he would like. This is significant as he was recently contacted by CNN to talk about teenage stragulation and autoerotic asphyxiation.

Therefore he asked me to find out if anyone would be able to speak these topics to CNN. If you would be interested in doing this please contact me at goody@udel.edu

I will be out of the office most of next week (July 25-29), but will forward your interest to Andy as soon as I return.

Thank you.
