The National Center for Health Education (NCHE) is proud to announce the theme
and dates for National Health Education Week (NHEW) 2005 –
Healthy Choices: Family Life Education - October 17-23, 2005
For more information about celebrating NHEW 2005, click here: http://www.nche.org/5functions_infoexchange_eduweek_2005.htm
Family life and sexual health is an increasingly important health topic for
youth and adolescents in the U.S. Responsible sexual behavior is one of the ten
Leading Health Indicators identified by Healthy People 2010, the nation's
comprehensive health promotion and disease prevention agenda. The U.S. Surgeon
General stated in 2001 that our nation must address the significant public
health challenges regarding the sexual health of our citizens, through a call to
action to promote sexual health and responsible sexual behavior. In addition,
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Adolescent and School
Health identifies sexual behaviors as one of the six critical types of
adolescent health behavior that contributes to the leading causes of death and
disability among adults and youth.
One way to advocate for family life and sexuality education is to work together
to help children make healthy choices a life-long habit. The National Center for
Health Education (NCHE) has announced that the theme for National Health
Education Week (NHEW) 2005 will be Healthy Choices: Family Life Education. NHEW
2005 will be celebrated October 17-23, 2005.
We are inviting interested individuals, communities, and organizations to
promote and participate in this national initiative to help people develop
healthy decision-making habits for life. If you or your organization would like
to donate materials, such as pamphlets, posters, or brochures, to support NHEW
2005, please contact Jeanne Chun at jeanne@nche.org or 212-463-4057.
We look forward to 2005’s celebrations!
Sincerely,
Jeanne Chun

CHHCS News Alert -- June 7, 2005
Studies Find Mental Illness Begins Early in Life:
In four papers published in the June 6, 2005, issue of Archives of General
Psychiatry, researchers note that half of all lifetime cases of mental illness
begin by age 14, but there are often long delays between the time symptoms first
appear and when people seek and receive treatment.
