Subject: A smart advocacy strategy

Friends,

Here's a clever strategy to promote smokefree workplace laws that involves advocacy within your own professional association or organization.

Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights (ANR) is encouraging health-conscious professional associations and organizations to pass resolutions that their future meetings and conferences be held only in cities with such laws. As the convention-hosting business is extremely competitive, this gives smokefree cities a competitive advantage, and helps to enlist influential business leaders in advocating for a 100% smokefree workplace law that includes restaurants, bars and nightclubs (i.e., any business that employees a human being with lungs).

In their greatest success so far, ANR helped shepherd the passage of a smokefree host city resolution through the American Public Health Association (APHA) last autumn. The new Operating Policy requires that, "When selecting sites and negotiating contracts for Annual Meeting venues beyond those currently contracted, APHA will hold all its future meetings in smoke-free cities" (online at www.apha.org/news/press/2004/oppolicy_121704.htm).

APHA's giant five-day meeting involved more than 14,000 registered participants and contributed an estimated $20 million to the Washington, DC economy last November. Now APHA's meeting planners must look to such smokefree cities as New York, Boston, San Francisco, and San Diego to host its conference. The grassroots organization SmokefreeDC is using this example in our advocacy efforts, and local advocates in other smoke-filled cities could use it too.

The more associations and organizations that adopt such resolutions, the more effective the strategy will be. This is where you come in - you can help advocate internally with your employer, and the professional associations you belong to, to adopt a Smokefree Cities Meeting Resolution. ANR has a model resolution at www.no-smoke.org/htmlpage.php?id=153. This site also includes a current list of smokefree cities with information that meeting planners are interested in, such as exhibit hall space and numbers of hotel rooms.

If your association or organization is in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, consider holding all your meetings in smokefree Montgomery County. And let local advocacy organizations know that this is your policy, such as SmokefreeDC (www.smokefreedc.org), the American Cancer Society Action Network (www.breatheasyDC.org), Smoke Free Maryland (www.smokefreemd.org), and Virginians For A Healthy Future (www.healthyva.org).

Please spread this message around.

Greetings.

If you have recently signed up for the HEDIR (since March 9) could you go back to the web site and 're-register'. Although I received your request the server did not save your data for the directory. It's also a reminder for people to take a look at their data (www.hedir.org/directory) to see if it's accurate. If it's not, go to http://www.kittle.siu.edu/subscriptions/
and re-enter your data.\

Thanks.
