Subject: Model Local School Wellness Policies on Physical Activity and Nutrition

The National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA) has developed a set of Model Local School Wellness Policies on Physical Activity and Nutrition to assist local school districts meet the requirements of the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004. In what truly has been a collaborative effort, 60 health, nutrition, physical activity, and education organizations assisted with or supported the development of the model policies, which are available at =20 www.schoolwellnesspolicies.org

NANA encourages you to disseminate these model school wellness policies widely and to work with school districts to use them as a tool to help schools take strong steps to promote physical activity and nutrition and address obesity. For example, you could:

- activate your members/constituents/colleagues to get involved with school wellness policy development and implementation at the local level;
- link to the model school wellness policies on your organization's website;
- include the school wellness policies issue on the agenda of your organization's meetings or conferences to inform others and encourage them to get involved;
- share information about the model school wellness policies with your members via email messages, newsletter articles, listservs, or other means; and
- work with schools in your own community to help develop and implement school nutrition and physical activity policies.
