Hi all,
For the last few months I have been pondering the idea of professional
development and been exploring returning to get my doctorate. On this list I
have received a range of good advice from a variety of professional
perspectives. As I have been noodling these ideas around in my head, I have been
encouraged by a colleague to write up a general article on the subject of
“professional development for health educators” that could possibly benefit the
field.
So I am committing myself to putting together this article and to do so, I want
to do some highly unscientific kibitzing with folks who might have an interest
in the subject.
I have posted a 20-question survey and posted it on Zoomerang in order to take a
quick pulse of health educators and their thoughts on professional development.
Subsequent to the survey, I hope to do
2-3 small email focus groups with interested folks.
So if you have any interest in sharing your practice and perspectives about
professional development click below to fill out the survey. Filling our the
survey does not obligate you to participating in the efocus groups.
http://www.zoomerang.com/survey.zgi?p=WEB224RKFK7B6K
Note: While all faiths are encouraged to complete the survey I am hoping for
decent representation from those at the BA and MA level.
Thanks!

Call for Volunteers for the Core Public Health Journals Project
=20
The Public Health/Health Administration Section (PH/HA) of the Medical Library
Association (MLA) is seeking health librarians and public health professionals
to serve as volunteers in the Core Public Health Journals Project, version 2.0.
=20
=20
The ongoing Core Public Health Journals Project is an effort to identify a list
of core public health journals that may be considered for selection, purchase,
or collection evaluation by all public health-related libraries in any of the
specialty areas covered. For further details or to see version 1.0 of the list
visit the Web site at:
http://www.phha.mlanet.org/activities/corejournal.html
=20
Health librarians are being called to serve as compilers. Either health
librarians or public health professionals may serve as reviewers.
Candidates should:
=20
(1) be currently working as a health librarian serving public health
or related areas represented on the lists OR a public health professional;
(2) be knowledgeable about the subject area(s) for which you are
volunteering either through primary professional responsibility or with
significant background knowledge in the area(s);
(3) be willing to commit to completion of the project for version
2.0.
=20
One compiler and one reviewer will be recruited for each of the following 13
subject areas. An individual may serve in dual roles (e.g., as a compiler for
two areas or as a compiler for one area and a reviewer for a second area). The
areas are:
=20
Biostatistics
Environmental health and sciences
Epidemiology
Health education/behavioral sciences
Health services administration
Biomedical and laboratory practice
International public health
Maternal and child health
Occupational safety and health
Public health practice
Public health dentistry
Public health nutrition
Public health nursing
=20
Review of titles from version 1.0 will begin in January 2006. Work will be
completed by the end of April 2006. The final list will be released at the PH/HA
section business meeting at the annual MLA conference in Phoenix, AZ in May
2006.
=20
If you are interested in serving as a compiler or a reviewer for version 2.0 of
this project, please provide your name, contact information, background related
to public health, and subject area(s) for which you want to be considered.
Designate whether you wish to be considered as a compiler or a reviewer for each
area you request. Send this information to Melissa Rethlefsen at mlrethlefsen@gmail.com
by November 15, 2005.
If you should have additional questions about what this project entails, you may
contact Melissa as well.
=20
Thank you for considering this valuable project!

Hi gang. I'd like to determine if and where the best resources are for research
related to success rates of behavior change programs. My inclination is to
believe that the bulk of material like this will be ""effort"
specific...behavior change related to a particular topic like condom use,
dietary adaptation, increasing activity level, etc. but is there some sort of
resource or particular journal that publishes material like this or the role the
health educator plays in successful efforts?
Thanks in advance
