A message to the education community from NASBE Executive Director Brenda
Welburn:
In early November, President Bush outlined strategies to safeguard the American
people against an outbreak of avian flu. Of the $7.1 billon requested by the
President, $644 million would be earmarked to ensure that all levels of
government are prepared for an outbreak of the so called bird flu.
One strategy will be that Secretary of Health and Human Services, Mike Leavitt,
will bring together state and local health officials to plan for a possible
epidemic. There was no mention of having Secretary Spellings convene state and
local education officials for a similar planning session.
In fact, in much of what has been written about preparedness, the role of
schools and school personnel is conspicuously absent. Some states and local
education and leaders have been proactive in this area and have already
developed comprehensive plans in case of a pandemic outbreak (http://www.pandemicflu.gov/plan/stateplans.html).
As others external to the school community develop strategies around this and
other issues affecting the wellbeing of children, all state and local boards of
education should develop and influence preparedness plans that make sense for
the school community. Plans that take into consideration the welfare of all
children, the dependence of parents and family on the school as a source for
rationale and accurate information, and the reality of what happens if schools
are closed for any period of time should be developed before there is a need for
them.
With a bit of luck there will be no need for such plans, but better safe than
sorry.

Karl,
I would try two places,
1 Contact the National Service Learning Resource Center they have great resource
librarians on staff and their wesite has a whole section dedicated to service
learning and higher ed:
http://www.servicelearning.org/
2. Contact Community-Campus Partnerships for Health
(CCPH) as they do a lot in the area of service learning at the higher ed level
and related to health.

We are looking to integrate some "canned presentations" that have been effective
at other universities, and we would want to modify them to meet the needs of our
students- we plan on having varied programs for different cultural groups...the
greeks.....In the past many programs have shown a video, followed by
discussions...and it has been an acceptable format...but we're looking for new
ideas.
So, if you have a program that you would be willing to share, please contact
me...
Thank you,
