Hello Everyone.
For those of you who know Steve Hohman

I just got off the phone with Claudette Hohman, and Steve died, at home, a few minutes ago (approximately 10:30 tonight, November 9). She has several family members with her, and they will stay with her for the time being. Steve fought a 14 month battle with a malignant brain tumor, and endured two major neuro surgeries, chemo therapy, and radiation therapy. He was very active in our professional organizations, attended conferences, and presented multiple times. He was dedicated to Health Education pursuits. Claudette asked me to notify you all, and to send a special thanks to those of you who have written to Steve over the
past few months. They were both so appreciative of your caring. If
you would like to send a card, their mailing address is: 1550 North Hemlock Rd. Hemlock, MI 48626 Steve's funeral will be sometime on Monday, Nov. 14, which is also Claudette's birthday. =20

If you want to send something else, Claudette said she and Steve had decided they didn't want flowers. Instead, you could send a contribution to any of the following:
the HRK Staff/Scholarship at Longwood University, (attention Nancy Scrugg, HRK Department, Longwood University, Farmville, VA 23901),=20 =20 Eta Sigma Gamma(national office, Ball State University, 2000 University Avenue, Muncie, IN),=20 =20 or to=20 Hospice (Heartland Hospice: Heartland Home Health. Their phone number is 800 275 4517, and they can give you the address).
Please continue to pray for Claudette as she goes through the next days and weeks.
Thanks=20
Bev Mahoney

In response to Dawn's question about a current text for the Coordinated Program.
I have used ETR Associates text.
Author - William Kane
Step by Step to Coordinated School Health Program Planning Guide.
Revised Edition.

I had previously considered using Health is Academic. I think you could continue to use your already created format/lessons/etc and fuse the two together very easily.

Hope this is helpful.

Thank you, Beverly, for letting folks know about Steve Hohman's death - I was just going to do the same so I am happy I checked the HEDIR list-serve first!

I do have one correction to make to the information regarding the donations to Longwood University where Steve last worked. Claudette set up a "Steve Hohman Fund" with the Longwood University Foundation and the correct information on how to do this if you plan to is to make your check out to the Longwood University Foundation with either a note saying so or a notation in the memo area of the check saying "Steve Hohman Fund". It should be mailed to:

Office of University Advancement
Longwood University
201 High St.
Farmville, VA 23909

Please rest assured that I send this information not to solicit for Longwood University but to make sure that should you decide to follow this route instead of sending flowers, which Claudette Hohman did not want, but that your check gets to the correct office and deposited in the correct account.

While Steve was in the Dept. of Health, Recreation, and Kinesiology just a short time before his cancer was diagnosed, he is deeply missed by his saddened colleagues and students! And the profession has lost a "real good one"!

If there's anything else I can provide to anyone, please let me know.
Thanks,
Chrys

Hello again. I apologize for the second message, but this morning Chrys Kosarchyn forwarded some more specific details to me for those who might be sending checks in remembrance of Steve to Longwood. The information Chrys sent is as follows:

Publication Cites Health Literacy in Chronic Disease Management:
Some people are unable to read written information or understand oral instructions about self-managing a chronic health condition, and providers need to take that into account in describing the condition and prescribing medications or procedures the patients must follow, according to a new publication distributed today at a meeting for science reporters in Washington, DC.
