Hi Everyone!
I recently became aware that Kaiser has joined with MTV to develop a booklet,
It's Your (Sex) Life: Your Guide to Safe and Responsible Sex which targets
teens. The booklet can be uploaded at http://www.kff.org/youthhivstds/upload/MTV_Think_IYSL_Booklet.pdf.
The word about this campaign has been spreading through our community and there
are many appalled. Personally/professionally I am not appalled.
I recommend that you check it out if you are not familiar with it. I am
interested in hearing your reactions and whether or not others have dealt with
the frantic reactions of a community.
Thanks! Colleen Mahoney

Colleen,
This is a very well written booklet. I am still amazed that in the 21st century
we still have people who believe that knowledge is harmful. I remember when Bob
Gold was AAHE Scholar back in the late 80s...he had an excellent presentation
called "Knowledge is Power" (or something like that)...seems counter to some of
the today's beliefs by the fanatical minority who believe that knowledge is
harmful.

Hi,
the booklet seems unusually clear at first glance. A couple of issues to mention
otherwise...
There has been a movement to call std by a new name (sti). In this country, they
have also been called infections alone without the unnecessary assumed moral
load. Second, "HPV or Genital Warts" does not show the whole picture.
A dissertation was published on parental issues here a few weeks ago. The
studies involved with it indicated that intimate contact is not always necessary
for the spread of HPV (more than 100 kinds mentioned in the booklet, which is
good) especially in mother infant communication... and that some infections
eventually heal by themselves.
Some clinically interesting features came up as well. It was mentioned e.g. that
seroconversion in infancy/early childhood might be helpful in building
antibodies and protect later when it might result in more serious outomes.
Seroconversion with HPV 16 or 18 was cited rare and weak; these have been noted
as the serious kinds of HPV associated with cervical cancer in the past. So
protection is needed as transmission is likely to take place in intimare genital
contact.
For 20 years, I have been asking clinicians and researchers about what
inactivates the HPV virus and I have not been given a conclusive response as
yet. This study did not offer insight in that respect.
So, some of the information is not complete but then we never get to there
anyway. There'll always be something to talk about.
