Hi Everyone!
I recently became aware that Kaiser has joined with MTV to develop a booklet,
It's Your (Sex) Life: Your Guide to Safe and Responsible Sex which targets
teens. The booklet can be uploaded at http://www.kff.org/youthhivstds/upload/MTV_Think_IYSL_Booklet.pdf.
The word about this campaign has been spreading through our community and there
are many appalled. Personally/professionally I am not appalled.
I recommend that you check it out if you are not familiar with it.
I am interested in hearing your reactions and whether or not others have dealt
with the frantic reactions of a community.
Thanks! Colleen Mahoney

Hi Colleen and all -
I had not seen this yet - thanks for the link. Who is appalled and by what? I
agree with other assessments, that it is clear and well
written, and targets the audience it is supposed to. Are community
people reacting to photos of same-sex couples???
We adults, educators, concerned parents, community folks, etc, need to
understand that sources like MTV are where teens and college students get a lot
of information about sex. Certainly, they see sexual depictions, often of a very
particular type, in videos, but the other MTV programming has a lot of
credibility in sexuality education, politics, etc - they have done a good job
with documentaries and educational programming. I find it interesting, tho, that
I don't find this publication on their website.

Judi and Others: I think it comes down to people just not wanting to
view/believe adolescents as sexual or as able to make choices. They think
such education encourages sexual activity. I'm sure the photos are
shocking to many. My community is very into abstinence education. They don't get
that the abstinence message is part of comprehensive education and that it is
possible to promote abstinence and provide accurate information without sending
mixed messages. I am in an awkward situation in that I am a professional health
educator as well as a very involved parent...in the schools, parent/teacher
association, and the coordinator of a community initiative based on the Search
Institute's developmental assets. Around here they assume such a person (minus
the professional aspect) would not support such promotions. I have walked on ice
the 5 years I've been here.
This provides an opportunity for me to step up and I will do so. Colleen

Colleen-
These photos are not any more shocking than last year's Abercrombie and Fitch
holiday catalogue, which I have saved for presentations and classes that I
teach. The truly amazing thing is that people think educational materials with
explicit photos will encourage sex, and yet they are not even looking around at
what kids see all the time in the most "innocent" of places.
Your comments about your dual role are shared by me- I am a health educator, and
researcherwork mostly in the area of teen pregnancy and STD prevention, as well
as drugs, tobacco, etc. I am also a very involved parent of two teenagers, and
in fact have been a member of the board of education for the past 5 years. In
part, I sought out my board position to assure that we were serving youth in
ways that are informed, open-minded, sensible, and research-based- whether that
is in the academic, health, social, or any arena. When you take a very public
community role, you have to walk on ice, but it is worth it!!

In the fall you sent via the listserv a link for reviewing the recommendations

I've accidentally deleted that and wondered if you could send that site to me
