Subject: Summary of Doctorate Programs

Hi all,

Last week I asked for ideas and recommendations for doctoral programs and was quite frankly astonished that 20 or so people responded to me. I not only got emails but phone calls and folks forwarded my email to others. Amazing this internet thing... : )

A handful of the people who emailed me asked for me to share what I found out as they too were in the same boat as I. So for all of you who asked, here is the summary of what I found.

First, I was pointed to the ASPH website as they have lists of distance learning programs, of which many are at the masters level.
http://www.asph.org/document.cfm?page=718

Second, several people pointed out the most reputable for profit distance learning programs, Capella, Kennedy Western,University of Phoenix, University.
Another suggested, Saybrook seemed to be the best choice among them. At the time I was interested in Alternative and Complimentary Health.

Of note, several vouched for the value of Walden University. I received working assurance that these are REAL doctoral programs with academic rigor and folks in academic positions out there have graduated from Walden.

On the other hand, one person listing distance learning programs held the contrarian position and said, “No distance learning program that I know of is anywhere near comparable to a solid research-based doctoral program."

A referral from one of my mentors to an old classmate and colleague of mine, turned up Fielding University, which also has a Organizational Development Ph.D.
program.

Third, a couple of people suggested I look in my own backyard (Oregon) stating that Oregon State has a good program and Mark K., suggested that I also not rule out a doctorate in Education, such as in curriculum design. Of the suggestions, this one is a no brainer that I simply did not think of.

Fourth, the short list of schools and programs I ought to consider includes:

*Chapel Hill
http://www.sph.unc.edu/hpaa/academic/drph.htm

* Texas Woman's University is currently seeking approval from the Texas Higher Education Board to offer its Ph.D. in Health Studies program completely online.

* University of Maryland http://www.hhp.umd.edu/

* Teacher's College Columbia University of NY, http://www.tc.edu/hbs/HealthEd/index.asp

* Department of Human Performance and
Health Promotion at the University Of New Orleans

THANXS!! to all for your generousity. Since I am unemployed, maybe I so ask for career advice too!
okay kidding :P

please excuse cross-postings...

i am part of a planning group exploring the possibility of creating a living-learning community (LLC) with academic, residential, service-learning, and student development components all related to health.
we are defining student health using a social ecological model and considering health needs and assets of the student population as individuals, as a community, and as part of the larger san francisco community with various influences influencing their behaviors and choices.

does your institution have such a living learning community in place? if
yes:

***In what ways does the LLC address aspects of health (emotional, physical, mental, spiritual, social), both as separate aspects and in an integrated approach?

***What academic courses are offered which relate to the vision of the community?

***What are the intended outcomes (academic, developmental, health-related, individual, community, and/or ecological) for this living-learning community?

***Who coordinates your campus's LLC? please share their contact info.

thanks so much for your assistance.

Subject: Impact of Community Health Major

Good evening everyone. I have been charged with the conversion of a non-teaching health ed major (which simply replicates school health coursework without licensure ) into a community health major. There has been a great deal of discussion on the possible impact in enrollment, transefer from other majors both within and outside the department, quality of student experience within the major, etc....

I am wondering if someone from a school having gone through this process of shifting from a non-teaching major to a community health major could give me some information on the impact it had in and out of your department.

Thanks in advance

Sarah,

If you have not yet been in touch with them, I would
contact the folks at the Community-Campus Partnerships
for Health (CCPH). They have great resources and
likely can hook you up with schools doing similar
things!
