HEDIR listserv members,
Last week, I asked for feedback on fitness certification organizations and any
listservs or online resources. For those of you interested in the responses, the
following is a brief summary:
Website for aerobic instructors: http://turnstep.com/
Website for fitness books/CDs/DVDs, etc.: http://www.exrx.net/
Website for K-12 PE: http://pecentral.org/
Listserv (only for Christian-based colleges) - based from the organization,
Christian Society of Kinesiology and Leisure Studies:
http://www.wheaton.edu/Kinesiology/bwilliams/CSKLSHomepage/CSKLSFrame-1.htm
The four top certification organizations:
ACSM - American College of Sports Medicine - this is the "gold standard"
(most certifications require a college degree)
NSCA - National Strength and Conditioning Assoc - this is also recognized like
ACSM, but generally more geared towards working with athletes/weight room, etc.
AFAA - Aerobics and Fitness Assoc. of America - good basic certification, more
geared towards those working in fitness studios teaching group fitness classes
ACE - American Council on Exercise - okay basic certification
NASM - National Academy of Sports Medicine - a newer organization, not yet
accredited or widely recognized outside of 24-hour fitness associates, but so
far is getting okay reviews, as the seem to base their education/certifications
off of ACSM and NSCAs information.
