It's my pleasure to introduce two new faculty members in the College of Human Environmental Sciences Dept. of Health Science at the University of Alabama:

Dr. Stuart Usdan comes to us as Associate Professor after a successful tenure at the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of S.
Carolina. Dr. Usdan, this years winner of APHA's PHEHP Section's Early Career Award, comes to UA with national research expertise in Alcohol studies, particularly high risk drinking perceptions among young adults.
Dr. Usdan brings with him NIAAA, NCAA, and USDOE funded projects, as well as many other project ideas. Extremely student-centered, Dr. Usdan was instrumental in founding the APHA Student Caucus, and served as President of that group, as well as having served on numerous dissertation and thesis committees while at USC. For such a young researcher, he is author of numerous articles, including the lead article in the most recent ACHA Journal, book chapters, published abstracts and NIDA Monographs, as well as serving on national boards and review panels in the area of substance abuse. His arrival at UA has positioned the College and department to take a highly active role in campus and community wide substance use initiatives. =20

Dr. Toya Russell has joined us for one year as Adjunct Professor after some world-class experience as a commissioned officer in the US Public Health Service (actively deployed to Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina). She currently serves as Associate Director, University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine Department of Family & Community Medicine Division of Research. Dr. Russell brings with her research expertise in reducing tobacco use in pregnant women (With Windsor and Crawford), HIV/AIDS education, and spirituality and stress reduction. Besides her work with the USPHS, Toya has served as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer, CDC Surveillance Branch, NCI Pre-doctoral Fellow, and has had post-graduate training at Harvard, Duke, and NIH. Teaching and or Director Post's include Morehouse School of Medicine and Meharry Medical College.

Subject: program survey advice please

Dear Health Educator Collegues,
I am still looking for help with a survey: I would like to make a tool that will predict which people will improve their body composition more, after participating in a 6 week educational/exercise program, if final measurements are taken 2 1/2 months after the program is over, compared to initial measurements and measurements at the end of the program. Another survey I would like to make would measure participant's ratings of self-esteem and self-efficacy.(to be given 3 times also)

Please point me in the right direction if you have heard of a similar program. I would greatly appreciate any help; I'm very limited with people resources on this small island.(and I have tried!) Thank you, Renee Veksler Guam Memorial Hospital Health Educator III
