9/6/05 - SOPHE Update on Annual Meeting
=20
The SOPHE Executive Committee met on September 2 to discuss options related to
its 56th Annual Meeting, given that the city of New Orleans has cancelled all
conventions until the end of November and APHA has formally announced its
decision to relocate its annual meeting.=20
=20
The Executive Committee is carefully considering many of the recommendations
from SOPHE members about how best to support our public health colleagues, as
well as the communities impacted by Katrina. In addition to our organizational
contribution to the American Red Cross, we will continue to look to our Delta
SOPHE chapter to provide input into how we can best assist those in need in the
weeks and months ahead.
=20
In the interim, SOPHE has decided to move forward with its 2005 annual meeting,
making necessary changes to our schedule and program in collaboration with the
Program Planning Committee. Since many SOPHE attendees depend on the
back-to-back meetings with APHA to maximize their limited travel resources, we
are working to reschedule the SOPHE meeting with APHA in mid-November or
December. A decision is expected to be finalized in the next week.
=20
We appreciate your patience. We know that you join us in thanking all of our
SOPHE and APHA colleagues who are providing emergency response assistance under
very trying conditions, not only in New Orleans but the other Gulf Coast
affected states.

HEDIRs,
Community organizations in cities like Denton, Texas are functioning very well
as they provide relief services to evacuees from southern Louisiana. United Way
of Denton and the Denton Parks and Recreation Services are coordinating local
relief efforts for approximately 240 evacuees who have reached our area to this
point in time. Various service organization, charitable societies, church
groups, and others are donating materials to met basic needs, including shelter,
food, clothing and bedding.
I am active in Rotary International. The Denton South Club (breakfast club) has
secured a warehouse with 3,000 square feet fo storage space and is beginning to
accept donated furniture, whihc will be distributed to evacuees as they find
rental houses and apartments. Volunteers from both rotary clubs, the Kiwanis
clubs, the elks, American Legion, Knights of Columbus and others are serving as
advocates for evacuees to assist them in accessing airline tickets to travel to
the homes of relatives (tickets are bought with FEMA or Red Cross funds) and
obtaining debit cards (funded by FEMA) with which to purchase basic supplies.
These kinds of activities are going on in communities across Texas and many
other states.
The American Red Cross continues to collect blood and cash donations for the
national relief effort. Local campus and community organizations are assisting
with these efforts. School children continue collecting food for both the local
food pantry and national food collection efforts. Local thrift shops and relief
agencies have been overwhelmed with the donations of clothing and used
furniture. I is wonderful to see community service activities thriving.

Dear Colleagues,
Earlier this year, I sent an e-mail noting the availability of free = copies of
my book, Taking Sides: Clashing Views on Controversial Issues = in Human
Sexuality. My publisher was flooded with requests and = distributed hundreds of
copies.
As the new semester begins, I am wondering if people have adopted it for = their
courses. I am very curious about the uses of the book for = in-class activities,
and at-home assignments. I am hoping to compile = this information for future
teacher's guides, and also for a workshop I = am developing.
If you have any ideas, please send them to me. Also, please note that I = am
collecting ideas (and articles) for the NEXT edition. If you have a = suggestion
for a topic, or if you've written something that might be = appropriate, please
don't hesitate to send it to me!
If you teach a course in human sexuality, and you haven't yet requested = a
copy, but would like one, please visit=20
http://catalogs.mhhe.com/mhhe/viewProductDetails.do?isbn=3D0072917113
My publisher has requested that future free copies be limited only to =
professors who are teaching sexuality courses.
Best,
Bill
