9/6/05 - SOPHE Update on Annual Meeting

=20

The SOPHE Executive Committee met on September 2 to discuss options related to its 56th Annual Meeting, given that the city of New Orleans has cancelled all conventions until the end of November and APHA has formally announced its decision to relocate its annual meeting.=20

=20

The Executive Committee is carefully considering many of the recommendations from SOPHE members about how best to support our public health colleagues, as well as the communities impacted by Katrina. In addition to our organizational contribution to the American Red Cross, we will continue to look to our Delta SOPHE chapter to provide input into how we can best assist those in need in the weeks and months ahead.

=20

In the interim, SOPHE has decided to move forward with its 2005 annual meeting, making necessary changes to our schedule and program in collaboration with the Program Planning Committee. Since many SOPHE attendees depend on the back-to-back meetings with APHA to maximize their limited travel resources, we are working to reschedule the SOPHE meeting with APHA in mid-November or December. A decision is expected to be finalized in the next week.

=20

We appreciate your patience. We know that you join us in thanking all of our SOPHE and APHA colleagues who are providing emergency response assistance under very trying conditions, not only in New Orleans but the other Gulf Coast affected states.

9/6/05, 6:08pm - SOPHE 56th Annual Meeting to be held in Philadelphia, Dec 8-10

=20

SOPHE's 56th Annual Meeting has been rescheduled to December 8-10, 2005, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

=20

The meeting will be held immediately preceding the APHA 2005 Annual Meeting in the same city. =20

=20

We are working on finalizing a hotel/meeting space contract to accommodate our original program as well as our Awards Banquet.
However, given the circumstances, some adjustments may need to be made in conjunction with the Annual Meeting Planning Committee and SOPHE leadership. We are also examining opportunities to commemorate and/or assist our Delta SOPHE colleagues in providing both financial and inkind contributions or assistance.

=20

In the interim, SOPHE has made the following changes to its preliminary program (posted at www.sophe.org):

=20

1) All registration fees will remain in effect, however, all the registration deadlines have been extended for 30 days:

=20

Early bird registration deadline - extended until 10/12

Final meeting registration - 10/12 - 11/11

Onsite meeting registration - After 11/12

=20

2) Note that registrations already received in the SOPHE office will be automatically transferred to the new venue. However, any registrants who cannot attend the Philadelphia meeting will receive full refunds - provided that National SOPHE receives their request in writing no later than September 30. Requests can be mailed or faxed to:

=20

SOPHE 56th Annual Meeting

750 First St, NE, #910

Washington, DC 20002

Fax: 202/408-9815

=20

3) Hotel information will be disseminated as soon as it is available.
We are making every attempt to keep sleeping room accommodations in line with prior rates/prices.

We appreciate your patience, and continue to appreciate your ideas and recommendations.

Well, they did it! APHA (and SOPHE) made a FEMA-like decision. Instead of delaying the New Orleans convention and INSISTING that New Orleans Convention Bureau stick with the plan and carry out their responsibilities for the convention, sending the desperately needed cash, and associated jobs, in this direction, they have chosen to go to another city. You can't blame a traumatized New Orleans. Were the New Orleans folks in their right mind when they said that it would be 3 months to repair New Orleans? Yesterday I met a team of folks going to repair only one of the many hotels in this area. There have been hundreds of restoration team folks coming in since Sunday! It will get done before December 10th!

This city is trying to recover, struggling for badly needed jobs and cash flow. The struggle is made more difficult when buisness folks, who should know better, choose to back out and thus, NOT help in the recovery process (do we really want and need to have more charity and Red Cross help. We NEED work!).

No question about it: APHA has made a knee jerk decision.

Where were APHA's mental health/counseling/human resources skills for the New Orleans Convention Bureau; APHA convention organizers SHOULD HAVE REALIZED THAT folks hit with a Category 4 storm, complete with looting, broken leeves, and the like, needed more than a two or three opportunities to make the very hard decision to cancel a multi-million dollar convention. When a loved dies, will you be given only three days to make important decisions? Is that enough time? Would counseling help?

My home has power, water, telephone service. Our cell phone service is in recovery. While I am fortunate, (albeit we lost almost everything to flood waters), 70% of utilities everywhere are getting back online. The convention center wasn't touched. Most hotels wil be repaired within weeks, certainly by December 10th! WHY DIDN'T THEY DELAY INSTEAD OF MOVE?!?!

People are giving up, moving away permanently. These are middle class folks who are in business. They are folks who own or work for businesses looking for the cash flow coming from doing business with other businesses, such as the huge APHA convention. What they see are agencies coming in for temporary, needed, and certainly appreciated help....but that's only TEMPORARY and SHORT TERM. Cash flow for work, jobs and business is LONG TERM. APHA contributed to stifling a long term solution.

With conventions pulling out and other businesses turning their backs on New Orleans as well...well would you stay?

I love Philly (I went to Temple) and I am proud that they are trying to pitch in. However, New Orleans needs APHA, and other business to keep the faith, stick with the plan and remember that the long term issues and the big picture is more important. Recovery will come, but slower.

Many people have asked about ways to assist those affected by hurricane Katrina.
We have identified a need here in Mobile, Alabama. Many of our school children have lost school uniforms and school supplies due to the hurricane. Refugee children who are coming to our city to attend school also have the same needs.

The school uniforms can be purchased at WalMart, so gift certificates/cards would be useful to purchase uniforms and school supplies. School supplies can also be donated and shipped here. If you need further information, do not hesitate to email me.

Also, we are very concerned about the mental health of these children.
The upcoming holidays will be particularly difficult, so if anyone wants to start a holiday gift or food drive, now is a good time to get started.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Dear Colleagues,

We have a student in the adult education doctoral program who want to conduct a research for her dissertation in the area of sexual orientation and health educ professionals. Specifically, has anyone looks into the issues on how health teachers who are gay/lesbian deals with their dual role as a health teacher and as an individual who is homosexual. Are there support system for gay/lesbian teachers in the school system? Given the controversies surrounding sexuality in the schools, we are guessing that many school health teachers are not open about their sexual orientation. Thus, if you have done some research in this area or know of people who have done so, could you please email me with ideas, references, etc. to guide my student in this research?

Thanks,

Raffy
