Georgia Southern University, a member institution of the University System of Georgia, invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Community Health Behavior and Education in the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health. Georgia Southern University is classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a Doctoral/Research institution. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Georgia Southern offers 120 academic majors in a comprehensive array of baccalaureate degrees and selected master's and doctoral programs. The University has earned national accreditation in 80 program areas from 21 accrediting bodies. Academic programs are organized in eight colleges: Business Administration, Education, Health and Human Sciences, Information Technology, Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health, the Allen E. Paulson College of Science and Technology, and the Jack N. Averitt College of Graduate Studies. The University awarded 2,777 degrees in 2004-2005.

A residential university with a Fall 2005 enrollment of 16,646 students, Georgia Southern is the largest university in the southern half of Georgia and apart from the three research universities, the most comprehensive center of public higher education in the state. One of the top choices in Georgia for new freshmen, including HOPE Scholars, Georgia Southern enrolls an increasingly selective student body representing all of Georgia, 48 states, and more than 85 nations. Ninety percent of undergraduates are full-time students. The University is enhancing its academic profile through higher admission standards, an expanded Honors Program, and scholarships for academically talented students.

Georgia Southern University is committed to advancing the State of Georgia and the region through the benefits of higher education, offering baccalaureate through doctoral degrees, and a variety of outreach programs. The University fosters access to its educational programs, provides a comprehensive and fulfilling university experience, and enhances quality of life in the region through collaborative relationships supporting education, health care and human services, cultural experiences, scientific and technological advancement, athletics, and regional development. Georgia Southern celebrates its

2006 centennial with a strategic plan to advance the University to the top tier of national rankings in its class.

The 675-acre park-like campus continues an era of capital construction that has opened new facilities for colleges and academic programs, student recreation and development, university housing, athletics, and public service. The learning environment is enhanced by a museum of cultural and natural history, a botanical garden, a unique wildlife education center, a performing arts center, and a continuing education and conference center. The University's Division I athletic teams compete in the Southern Conference. The campus is located in Statesboro, a safe, hospitable Main Street community of 30,000, an hour from historic Savannah and beach resorts, and approximately 200 miles from Atlanta.

On January 14, 2004, the Board of Regents established the first School of Public Health in the University System of Georgia and named it the Jiann-Ping Hsu School of Public Health. The establishment of the School was made possible by a generous gift from Dr. Karl E. Peace, in memory and honor of his wife, Dr. Jiann-Ping Hsu. In order to position the Jiann-Ping Hsu School of Public Health for accreditation by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), the School was transitioned to the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health (JPHCOPH) effective January 1, 2006. Our mission is to invest the necessary resources to build an outstanding College of Public Health that will be recognized nationally for teaching, research, and service. Justification for selection of a College of Public Health at Georgia Southern University is directly related to the potential impact this institution will have among rural and underserved residents of the state.

The JPHCOPH is embarking on a massive and sustained recruitment effort.

We are not only seeking academicians with strong potential for teaching, research, and service, but we are seeking individuals who will embrace the challenge of building a College that can be accredited by the CEPH.

Currently, the JPHCOPH offers the Master of Health Services Administration (M.H.S.A.) and the Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degrees, with emphasis areas in Biostatistics, Community Health, Environmental Health Sciences, Epidemiology, and Health Policy & Administration. In addition, plans to offer the Doctor of Public Health

(Dr.P.H.) are in development and should be operative by Fall 2007.

The JPHCOPH also houses the Karl E. Peace Center for Biostatistics and the Center for Rural Health and Research. Along with the Department of Biostatistics at Virginia Commonwealth University the College co-sponsors the annual Biopharmaceutical Applied Statistics Symposium -- BASS. The meeting is regarded as one of the premier conferences in the world in biostatistical and regulatory aspects of drug research and development.

Marjorie and others

I grew up in a large family and endured many a bruised elbow banging into my siblings as we all tried to jockey into the place to be the "Chief Sibling" and as the third child found myself often fighting loosing battles and at times when I did end up in front I recognized it is no big deal. Unfortunately this conversation is reminding me of my childhood. Doctors can't do it better, they are just bigger bullies with their professional associations.... We all know that nurses are those brainless ones who just act like know-it-alls.....

When the real fight is about the dismantling of public health. We have seen in the last few years, the increasing watched the demise of public health. the List is long and here are a few to start us:

1) drug compnaies underwriting FDA drug trials;

2) immunity from lawsuits given to drug companies & fast food companies

3) eviscerating of a major tobacco industry settlement

4) the promotion of psuedo-science as true science (ala abstainence ed)

5) dismantling of public information strucutres (distorted info on web sites, research taken off of websites, Eric libraries Gutted, EPA research Libraties gutted)

6) EPA and OSHA policies and regulations gutted, ignored and reversed

7) advisory panels stacked with pro-industry folks,

8) food labeling laws diluted and national labeling adopted with a no-premption clause

9) the dispmatling of prevention with money diverted to terroriam prevention.

10) Wholesale elimination of programs and conversion of traditionally competitive grants to earmarks (ala

FIPSE)

The list could get way longer and more detailed but as long as we focus on whether the spokesperson is an MD, RN, MPH (with CHES of course)..... we will lose the battle.

It is time for us siblings to stop fighting and start acting as a family before it is too late. WE NEED national leadership that truly includes a fair checks and balance system which we currently don't have right now. Fighting for change in November is way more important than fighting for a spokesperson.

Funny how this email a year ago would have been seen as grossly liberal and partisian but today. with 60-70% of people disapproving of the current lack of accountability in DC it is increasingly a bi-partisan message.

Are we still debating national spokespersons? I must not be getting all the conversation threads but after reading the most recent exchange may I suggest that we be at least respectful of each other. We are in a very divisive period of human history now, not only in the country but throughout the world. Human beings have gone through these periods in the past and many have looked back and asked, "What were they thinking?"

Following Pamela's caustic remarks I see why our world crises will not be solved anytime soon when even within our owns ranks we cannot respectfully disagree. Disrespecting each other's values, policitcs, religion, etc will never solve our very great issues. Usually health educators give me a great deal of hope. Today I fear for the human race for the forseeable future.

By the way, I am a nurse AND a health educator and I have strong opinions. However, I thought respecting individual values was what nursing and health education is all about. Best wishes to all those who truly want to make a positive impact and try hard to work for the common good.

Greetings HEDIRites…

This message is a request for those with a fitness expertise. Others can just delete.

I’m looking for a set of standards for fitness…I don’t have any physical education contacts and I’m hoping that somebody can help. What specifically I am looking for is national standards for various teenage years (13-17) on various physical activities such as the mile run, pull ups, sit ups, push ups….ones that will show that if you are a13 boy, run a mile in 7:00, you’re at the 70% percentile (just making up the data). I’ve search the AAHPERD website but found nothing. If anybody knows of any such data, could you let me know? Thanks.
