Mark et al,

Are there any professional rules/etiquette re: posts on the HEDIR? If so, would you please post them to remind people and if not, maybe there should be. On this health education listserve, we frequently touch on politics because it is relevant. However, there is no need to be so confrontational and mean-spirited as in this last post. THis is the type of post that will make many people who use this listserve for their professional activities want to leave - and I'm definitely one of them, after having been on the listserve for about 10 years or so.

Oh, another MoveOn.org campaign thread...... <eyes roll>. Wait til '08. LOL!

The topic of national nurse, MD, etc is important in and of itself. Surely more than one issue at a time can and should be addressed.

Your list:

1) That's why the third world is ever increasingly becoming our human subject research guinea pigs

2) Oh, and a person should receive a few million b/c their spilled coffee in their lap???

That's why there is waning OB/GYN private practices (among others) in this country. Everybody wants to win the lotto.

3) Basically windfall for lawyers.

4) If you are a parent, I think it would be in their/your best interests to have teens wait for sex until 18. They will not die, but could die if they didn't. Education should be their focus! Human biology hasn't changed.

5) no argument.

6) I believe it takes an Act of Congress to change EPA regulations...

7) usual.

8) Fast food doesn't have it on the wrapper anyway, lol..

9) 9-11, 3-11, 7-7, etc. Same people would whine 'why didn't you protect us'....lol.

10) politics as usual.

p.s It's still partisan. Funny, even with Iraq fiasco, high gas prices, scandals, etc

I seriously doubt Dubya would lose if the election was held in 2006 as opposed to 2004. You guys still don't get it (what majority of Americans care about, hint: it isn't global warming) and probably never will. Good luck in Nov., you'll need it.

Greetings HEDIRites…

This message is a request for those with a fitness expertise. Others can

just delete.

I’m looking for a set of standards for fitness…I don’t have any physical

education contacts and I’m hoping that somebody can help. What specifically

I am looking for is national standards for various teenage years (13-17) on

various physical activities such as the mile run, pull ups, sit ups, push

ups….ones that will show that if you are a13 boy, run a mile in 7:00, you’re

at the 70% percentile (just making up the data). I’ve search the AAHPERD

website but found nothing. If anybody knows of any such data, could you let

me know? Thanks.

Folks…

Thanks for your help with the fitness standards. I’ve consistently found three…the first two were of no use because it appears that I had to buy the program (and I’m too cheap to do that…☺)

The third is great…thanks Jennifer White. It’s an excel file with normative data…

Friends and colleagues,

I would like to support Shadia's request for civility, tact, and diplomacy.

As trained communicators and discussion facilitators in face to face

situations, we need to roll those skills over into our electronic

communication and discussions.

Freedom of speech is important, and I appreciate, if not always enjoy and

agree with, differences of opinions...but they do make me think and for that

I am grateful to the sender. However, like many a child - my problem, I

admit - I turn off when hearing or reading what sounds like yelling or

cruelty and meanness - even if it wasn't intended that way. Everyone

remembers the expression:

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not

sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant - Robert McCloskey

The communication process of Conceptualizing an Idea, Encoding it into

phrases and words, Sending it through all kinds of "noise", Receiving it,

Decoding it, and Interpretting it, Conceptualizing an Idea, Encoding It and

Responding is hard enough, true.

But, please, let's take a bit of extra time to "compose with care" and to

increase the odds that people will read our messages and want to participate

in the dialogue or multi-logues that are so important to our intellectual

health and growth.

Thank you, and thank you, Shadia

I am sure that we have all sent a thoughtless post at one time or another and I personally have been guilty of fanning flames around issues I am engaged in (tho I am trying harder not to). I am not sure what compelled Pam to dig up a post sent four months ago and rip into it out of context but as a reminder (including a self reminder) I found this great link to a set of guidelines titled:

KDG and Interested Others,

I loved your post. It is well that we communicate in civil tones, although I have to admit I love to rip a good flame occasionally. As I once responded to a colleague who predicted that he would be flamed for expressing his opinion on HEDIR, the Marines trained me to use a flame thrower. It gives one a rush to blow the opposition away occasionally. On the other hand, many are fragile and timid. They were not molded by drill instructors and infantry training instructors. They may not have been hazed by fraternity brothers, sorority sisters or mean ol' research faculty members. I accept your call for civility.

Shadia, and others...

I feel that Karen did a great job at expressing my opinions. Keep in mind

that we have over 1,600 subscribers to the HEDIR...as my previous email

requesting information about fitness standards illustrates, the HEDIR is one

of the most powerful tools that we as health educators can have to help

others. Since January 1994 over 19,000 messages have been sent over the

HEDIR. Certainly there have been some irrelevant messages (i.e., I'm out of

the office...) but by far the majority of responses have been extremely

beneficial.

I think the vast majority of the people on the HEDIR are respectful...and I

also think the vast majority of those that appear to be 'disrespectful' are

not...it just comes across that way because of the limitations of email.

I want the HEDIR to continue to be a place where one can express an opinion

without fear that they will be chastised for such an opinion. I think we

have had way more examples of good discussions rather than negative

discussions...as Karen mentioned I think we need to be aware of the vast

difference of opinion that exists on so many topics.

What you may or may not know is that in some instances where a person has

'gone over the edge' I typically follow up with a memo indicating that

they've probably have 'gone over the edge..' A few have dropped from the

HEDIR...but most send back a memo indicating 'yeah, I guess I did...sorry'

I think the HEDIR can be something we can all be proud of because of its

power to help you the profession. So while we should always be a little

concern about not wanting to offend people, we need to realize that it's a

large group...and probably no matter what you send out you'll offend

somebody. Also remember that the good of the HEDIR far outweighs the

occasional problem.

Good job folks.

I believe that it is a slippery slope to inhibit freedom of speech and expression.

Ideally, through the development of a marketplace of ideas, one discovers truth. It

is too often that people revert to a censoring mechanism to protect themselves or

others from ideas. Censorship limits innovation and creativity, though it does help

to affirm normative or powerful belief systems of individuals or groups. Although

people typically have more freedom in their thought than in their speech, increasing

the distance between thought and speech is not a functional or admirable goal;

people's thoughts drive them more than their speech. If one is not saying

something, it does not mean that they are not thinking it. Improving and

maintaining one's freedom of speech allows people to better understand what

others are thinking.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the First Amendment of

the United States Constitution position freedom of speech as a fundamental

underpinning of democracies. The freedom of speech exists to protect people from

repercussions for expressing ideas outside of the norm. People are rarely

persecuted for expressing a normative idea. I could think contrary to and/or speak

out against another person's idea, but I would not prevent someone from

expressing an idea. However, one must also accept that simply because he or she

expressed an idea that he or she is correct simply based on expression. Truth is an

end of of expression, and evidence is a means by which some establish truth

through expression. However, truth and accuracy are not inevitable consequences

of expression.

In taking part in the process of free speech and freedom of thought, one should not

lose one's ability to and interest in developing connections between impulse-

control, self-control, and social-control. We should not automatically react by

positioning another policy, procedure, or law limiting speech as the resolution to a

comment that we may disagree with. Through the establishment of endless

numbers of social control mechanisms on speech, we chip away at our freedom of

speech. In and of themselves, emotional appeals and emotional responses to issues

or fears of emotional responses are, in my opinion, an inadequate justification for

reducing individual's civil liberties. If everyone established a social control

mechanism (policy, law, etc.) for how all others must speak with them in an attempt

to assure optimal satisfaction in discourse, the world would become a very lonely

place. We would only talk to ourselves for fear of consequences or fear of violating

another person's Policy & Procedure (e.g., P&P #1,524,789).

My thoughts.
