Folks,

If you have 15 minutes, take a look at this video. It's about the future of education and it has some interesting ideas. What I find most interesting is that almost all of this is within our reach.

Mark,

This is a novel approach to health education to say the least. What did the video receive "international acclaim" for? Raising awareness about testicular cancer? The It increased the number of men who checked self-checked their testiculars for cancer? Or for eroticizing a serious disease?

If it did any of those three things, brava! I'm going to try showing it next semester in a carefully planned way and see what happens.

Thanks for the great resource Mark.

Since we are sharing videos, here is one that many of you may have seen for breast self-exams.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6174907440780685009&q=breast+self+ex

am+video

I received a complaint about this video when students used it to recruit respondents in the second round of emails for the evaluation of a Web based intervention they developed. The individual who complained all the way to my University Provost, thought it was repulsive. As we have discussed on this list in the past, humor is quite subjective.

If you would like to see the breast and testicular cancer intervention that some of my students developed you can click on the link below. Sorry it is too late for you to win any of the incentives that students were able to get donated for this program.

http://www.optimalhealthconcepts.com/cancer/

I thought this was an innovative way for undergraduates in my health promotion methods class to use SurveyMonkey.com to conduct a health education program. The content could have been more polished and may even be misleading in some places, but they had a short time frame to plan, fundraise, develop, market, implement and evaluate the project.

I'm not getting much work done this Saturday so the next video represents environmental interventions to improve traffic safety. Why are all the good ideas coming from outside the U.S.?

Enjoy

Well, we have survived the first year of our worksite health promotion program. Come January 1, 2007, we retake the health assessment and again sign up for an individual action plan. That recurs every year to get full health benefits. We also received this "Year in Review" information.

"It has been almost two years of remarkable progress for King County's Health Reform Initiative. Workers, partners, families, patients, and doctors have all become better informed and much more involved in taking charge of personal well-being. Below is a look back on a successful 2006.

Unprecedented Enrollment Means Real Improvement

* More than 90 percent of eligible King County employees and their spouses or domestic partners took the wellness assessment, far above the 30 percent rate typical for the vendor running the program. (If you didn't, you did not attain a level needed to keep your current health benefits without additional, significant out of pocket costs.)

* Almost all who took the assessment enrolled inn individual action plans.

(If you didn't, you did not attain a level needed to keep your current health benefits without additional, significant out of pocket costs.)

* Seventy-five percent of high-risk participants who took coaching calls this year reported improving or eliminating one or more risk factors (i.e., weight, smoking, cholesterol, hypertension, etc). The typical rate is 60 percent.

* Fifty-seven percent of 4,183 coaching call participants reported an elimination of at least one risk factor."

On to 2007. Margo
