Received this response from Carolyn Rooke regarding the Standard and Poor's email some of you may received. The fact that she responded is a good sign.
I don't think this is a spam/phishing expedition, and it has legitimacy.
How you respond to the memos are up to you..but if you do please keep me posted.

Subject: RE: Health Education Consultation Request--Standard & Poor's
Hi Mark,
Thank you for your response. I understand your concerns, and I will be happy to address them.
I work within the Healthcare Sector of Standard & Poor’s Vista Research. We are an intermediary research firm and a division of Standard & Poor’s, which is owned by McGraw-Hill Companies. We have been an established organization for over 6 years and Standard & Poor’s acquired us about a year and half ago. We not only work within the healthcare industry, but we cover technology, media, retail, energy, industrials, among others. I have included our websites for you to review the other verticals we work within and to gain a better perspective of our company:
www.vistaresearch.com www.societyofindustryleaders.com
Since I work within the healthcare division, I am regularly researching and identifying industry experts to invite to join our Society of Industry Leaders. I located the HEDIR website through my personal research into different health education programs. From your homepage, I was connected to individual’s pictures and profiles, which I reviewed. I e-mailed those that I felt had a unique professional experience within the area of health education and appeared to be highly qualified. I was intrigued by many people’s profiles, but I did not e-mail your entire membership. In addition, I apologize for contacting them directly, but I found no information on your website saying I could not do so or that I had to go through you.
I mentioned the HEDIR in my e-mail with the sole purpose of identifying the source through which I found their contact information and their personal link to the topic of health education. I did not claim, nor was I trying to claim any association with the HEDIR. I merely thought professionals involved in promoting health through education would be interested in such an opportunity.
My apologies for this mis-communication, but please feel free to forward this information onto your members.
Best,
Carolyn Rooke

Subject: RE: Health Education Consultation Request--Standard & Poor's
I tried to send this earlier and received a bounced message…
I received this memo today and am interested in responding to your request.
However, in lieu of the avalanche of spam one needs to question any such request. I am cc’ing the HEDIR and will share any response with this group.
First, I am the owner and operator of the HEDIR. During the past several days I have received numerous emails from members asking about your request. Apparently you have been sending it to HEDIR subscribers. The HEDIR is a professional Health Education discussion group and is restricted to only health educators. The HEDIR web site does give an opportunity for people to download the list with the exclusive purpose of using it to promote health education initiatives (i.e., conference announcements, research requests). All others (i.e., book publishers) are expected to purchase the use of the mailing list.
Second, I’m a little concerned about the validity of your request. You state that you are contacting the person because of their "recognition of their professional involvement with HEDIR". Since you have little knowledge on what the HEDIR is, nor the role that people have, and since you sent it to almost everybody on the HEDIR, this indicates to me that you are trying to legitimatize your organization through the use of the HEDIR name and it’s people.
Again, you may be a legitimate organization and you may have honorable intentions, but at this point your request is suspicious. The general policy is to have a person contact me requesting permission to use the list. If deemed appropriate, I give permission. If the request is a non-health education related request, such as yours, we negotiate a fee for the one use email to the members. With that in mind, how do you propose we handle this situation?

Subject: Health Education Consultation Request--Standard & Poor's
Dear Mark,
I hope this e-mail finds you well. I write to you from Standard & Poor’s Vista Research, an independent primary research firm based in New York City.
I identified you through my research into different health education programs, and in recognition of your professional involvement with HEDIR, I would like to invite you to become a Member of the Society of Industry Leaders.
The Society of Industry Leaders is a global network of distinguished professionals who are leaders in their respective industries. Standard & Poor’s Vista Research clients, typically institutional money managers, look to speak with Members of the Society of Industry Leaders to better understand industry specific topics and themes, usually via telephone consultations. Our clients regularly come to us looking for educational conversations on current healthcare programs devoted to the advancement of the health of all people and how the integration of technology and other systematic approaches are being used to advance public health.
Consultations are scheduled at your convenience, and are always one-on-one with our clients. Members are not asked to speak about their own companies and all confidentiality agreements are honored. You can accept or decline these consultations for any reason, on a case-by-case basis.
Unlike traditional research firms, we do not engage in written research reports or employ research analysts. Instead, we recruit and compensate industry professionals, such as you, to educate our clients on industry trends, market dynamics, and competitive landscape. Our clients are bound by strict nondisclosure agreements, and consultations are neither recorded nor published. Industry Leaders are neither asked, nor permitted to discuss their own companies.
Membership in the SIL is free, requires no minimum time commitment, and no advanced preparation is required for consultations. Prior to client consultations, Vista Research will contact applicable SIL Members to discuss call topics and ensure SIL Member appropriateness.
Below is a formal invitation into the Society of Industry Leaders. If you could take a brief moment to answer a few questions, Vista Research can then contact you regarding specific consultation requests from our clients that fall within your area of expertise.
To join our Healthcare Services Network within the Society of Industry Leaders, please click on the link below:

Please do not hesitate to contact me directly if you have any questions about what is involved in membership of the Society of Industry Leaders; my contact information can be found below.
Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter. I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind Regards,
Carolyn Rooke
