Karl and Bill both make valid points related to grass roots
practitioners sharing their experiences with those who have the luxury
of attending national or international conferences. However, it doesn't
have to be that way anymore because we have the technology available to
bring them to those conferences electronically. In our very rural state
of South Dakota all universities and many school districts have the
capability of sending and receiving video conferencing of high quality.
Our teacher education students all get experience teaching by distance
before they graduate. Those grass roots professionals should be
encouraged to submit proposals to national conferences to present via
video-conferencing from their local area. Those in charge of
coordinating national conferences should be encouraged by participants
to include regularly scheduled distance presentations in the
presentation line-up. We would all benefit from this type of
experience.

Hello HEDIR Friends,
I am sure you do not remember me reaching out to you when I relocated =
from the Bay Area to Chicago years ago and was looking for employement =
in Health Education. I found myself now in the position of an Emergency =
Response Coordinator, because that's where the funding was. As a Health =
Educator, I bring a unique set of skills to the table and have found =
myself now responsible for agency training as it pertains to Emergency =
Preparedness in addition to my ERC roles of communication, coordination, =
and collaboration with my communities. Several of the CHES competencies =
fit directly into my day to day roles as an ERC: being a resource, =
coordination, program planning, etc. While I had no formal "emergency =
managment" training, my learning curve has been steep and as we all =
know, content is easy to master its the skills that stay with us =
forever. =20
