Does anyone have a citation for a paper published recently (2003-present) in the
American Journal of Health Education on "the location of health education/health
promotion programs" within colleges and universities?
Specifically, the paper states that there are 230 programs nationwide and 125
prepare school health teachers and 115 prepare health education majors. It also
states that 60% of these programs are located in Colleges of Health Sciences.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! LR

Hi all,
I need to take 12 units of "Health Ed. " classes, my credential requirements
have recently changed. I have taught middle school health for 24 years, but,
alas, the state no longer thinks I am qualified.
I need some program suggestions so I can pick up the units by internet, one
class a semester for the next couple of years.
thanks,
Robin Gray Ballard

Greetings Colleagues:
The message today from Robin Gray Ballard about needing internet based courses
provides the opportunity for us to remind those of you in the profession about
the Health Education and Promotion Network - on-line courses offered at
www.HEPNetwork.org There are a variety of courses currently being offered at the
graduate level through the University of Central Arkansas at a moderate fee.
More courses are in development and we would also be pleased to have additional
University partners offering these courses.
Please contact the HEPNetwork administrator: JEddy@hlkn.tamu.edu for further

Karen,
Interesting you posted your article. When Michael P.
brought this conversation up a couple of weeks ago, I immediately thought of
your article and actually reread it. I was intending to post a comment but got
sidetracked. What I found interesting in your article you stated, a proposal
“that the 11 national professional organizations and the NCHEO, the NCHE and the
NCHEC combine resources, functions, systems, and perhaps even staff to become
one strategic, centralized, financially sustainable health education
organization (with specialty sections, to be sure!) That will speak and act on
behalf of the entire profession.”
One of the problems that we face is one of language.
For example, in your article you are interchangeably using what I think are
different words and concepts.
Consolidation, (the creation of a super-organization) is not the same
inter-dependence (which suggests overlapping autonomy between orgs) and neither
term is the same as unification (which is about purpose and strategy).
But at face value, even if we did consolidate off of the organizations as you
suggest, health education will never have the clout of an AMA because taken
together, all of us in health education would never have the scale of say the
AMA. Consider that the AMA in 2004 reported a $39.8 million operating profit, a
membership base of 11,500 and a potential membership base of 567,000 a factor of
something like 14x the number of 40K health educators listed in your article.
In fact, it is counter productive to suggest that “if we were only like the AMA
then….” because we can’t be like the AMA.
I would like to offer an alterative view based on a theory put forward by Gideon
Rosenblatt of the environmental group One Northwest (see below for the link). He
suggests that
“Movement as Network shifts the focus away from individual people and
organizations working on environmental issues and toward the connections that
link them together. At the heart of this third path is a belief that the
environmental movement is not just some vague concept, but that it is an actual
entity; a network, made up of very real interconnections between people and
organizations that is more than just the sum of its parts.”
He goes on to describe a model of creating relationships between organizations
and that organizations, organize and specialize themselves around either:
People, Solutions or Resources. In short, he suggests,
“Specialization and a focus on core competencies open the door to new strategies
and new types of relationships between organizations. Complexity theory suggests
that for the environmental movement to evolve to its next stage this kind of
specialization of institutions is half the problem. The other half is weaving
these very different individual nodes together into an integrated, harmonious
whole.”
As always, I too am interested in seeing this discussion continue as I think the
profession needs to be strengthened too!

A well linked collaborative network would be a valuable step forward, Mark, I
agree. You're right, consolidation was probably not the best choice of words.
The Coalition, backed with a strong network or alliance of organizations
agreeing to work together in a coordinated way would be very powerful indeed.
Thank you so much for your feedback and for taking the time to reread the
article.
