Dear HEDIR Colleagues,
I am delighted to tell you that volume 1, number 1 of the American Journal of
Sexuality Education, co-edited by Elizabeth Schroeder and myself, is online in
its entirety! You can visit http://www.haworthpress.com/web/AJSE/
and click "View A PDF Sample" to download it. Just hang around the printer for a
while if you are going to print all 231 pages! For paid subscribers, the print
version will be coming out later this month. If you are unsure about your
subscription status, please send a note to lbeagell@haworthpress.com.
After the first issue comes out, the rest of the issues will follow quarterly.
AJSE 1(2) and AJSE 1(3) have been put to bed, and AJSE 1(4) is currently in the
review process. We will be sending out a call for papers for AJSE 2(1) over the
next few weeks, so watch for it soon! (Keep in mind, you don't need to wait for
a call for papers --- if you have a great article or lesson plan ready, feel
free to send it at any time!)
Please read on for what folks are saying about the AJSE:
Bill Taverner, MA & Elizabeth Schroeder, EdD(c), MSW Co-Editors, American
Journal of Sexuality Education sexedjournal@hotmail.com www.haworthpress.com/web/AJSE
"The American Journal of Sexuality Education is a welcome addition to our field.
The journal provides readers with a broad perspective of sexuality education by
combining thought-provoking articles, valuable lesson plans, and concise reviews
of available materials. Educators, in particular will find this new resource
invaluable; it can help them both think critically about the important issues in
sexuality and work practically every day.
AJSE is a must-have for today's sexuality educator."
Joseph DiNorcia, Jr., President & CEO
Sexuality Information & Education Council of the United States
"With the publication of the American Journal of Sexuality Education a void has
been filled among the numerous scholarly journals that address human sexuality.
With the publication of this journal sexuality educators have a place to
communicate with their peers concerning a wide variety of topics of interest and
relevant to the work of those in the field. The current volume of the journal
offers readers an interesting and insightful array of articles that explore
theoretical concerns, current research, and educational approaches and
techniques that are of value to sex educators. I strongly endorse and recommend
the publication to libraries and educators, practioners, researchers, and all
who may have an interest in current concerns relevant to sexuality education."
Howard J. Ruppel, MPH, Ph.D. Ed.D., ACS
Chancellor & Academic Dean
Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality
"Finally, a peer-reviewed journal focused exclusively on the needs and interests
of sexuality educators! The American Journal of Sexuality Education is a
must-have resource for sexuality educators who teach in schools, community-based
settings, clinics, and universities. Readers will find that AJSE provides just
the right mix of articles that focus on original research, syntheses and
translations of research, analytic papers, lesson plans and commentary. This
journal is going to advance our field in so many ways - it provides a respected
mechanism to disseminate our work, a stimulus for informed dialogue and debate,
resources and information to update and improve our programs, and a holding
place for documenting and archiving sexuality education programs, practices and
research. If your program budget is tight and you can afford to purchase only a
few resources this year, make sure one of them is a subscription to the American
Journal of Sexuality Education."
Lori A. Rolleri, MSW, MPH
Senior Program Manager, ETR Associates
"The inaugural issue of the American Journal of Sexuality Education offers a
refreshing combination of empirical research, commentary on the field and key
issues, and practical tools for teaching about sexuality. The editors have not
shied away from bringing competing perspectives on some of the key controversies
in sexuality education together into the volume; and done so in a manner that is
truly equitable to the various positions. I found it particularly helpful to
have so many articles that lay out the issues followed by empirical research
that addresses some of the questions raised.
The tension between the science-driven and religio-philosophical approaches to
sexuality education is approached in a manner I wish informed more of the
public/political discourse on this important topic. Indeed, the theme of the
challenge of science to more traditional approaches to sexuality is generally
handled well in the papers, with only a hint of self-righteous progressivism
showing through. If I were teaching a sexuality course, I would definitely use
this volume to introduce students to some of the key issues, as well as to
challenge them to think about their own knowledge."
Roberto Hugh Potter, Ph.D.
National Center for HIV, STD, and TB Prevention
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
"'It is about time!' These were my thoughts upon reviewing the first issue of
the American Journal of Sexuality Education. There has been a need for years for
a journal devoted entirely to sexuality education and I am absolutely thrilled
that it has now come to fruition. The first issue is full of cutting edge
empirical and theoretical articles, practical and innovative lesson plans, and
thoughtful resource reviews. The content, which is diverse in topic and scope,
ranges from the classroom level (Edith Ellis and Deborah Miller's lesson
entitled "Contraception Beach Ball"), to the national level (Gary Kelly's
commentary on the state of sexuality education), to the international level (Lis
Mauer and Maureen Kelly's article on their work in Namibia)."
As I reviewed the issue, I eagerly paged through in search of ideas that I could
apply in my own teaching. I was generously rewarded with thoughts and ideas from
the leaders in the field. I am confident that the American Journal of Sexuality
Education will be an invaluable resource to anyone practicing sexuality
education!"
Erika Pluhar, PhD, MS
Project Director
Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University
"Bravo to the co-editors and multiple contributors for this excellent premier
issue of the American Journal of Sexuality Education! With its multiple
theoretical and research-based articles, resource and book reviews and lesson
plans, this is a comprehensive, diverse, and thought provoking look at issues
affecting sexuality education and educators today. The articles are solid, often
challenging current norms, and relevant to today's top issues such as media,
internet, issues of gender identity including transgender, abstinence and
comprehensive sexuality education and more.
Multiple audiences can benefit from this volume including students as well as
seasoned professional educators, researchers, and advocates."
Pat Paluzzi, CNM, DrPH
President and CEO, Healthy Teen Network (formerly the National Organization on
Adolescent Pregnancy, Parenting and Prevention)
"The American Journal of Sexuality Education (AJSE) is a much-needed journal in
such an important field as sex education. In fact, this is the first journal of
its kind dealing with sex education from a diverse perspective and appealing to
a widespread audience, such as classroom teachers, academicians, healthcare
professionals, parenting educators, family planning counselors, clergy, and
community educators. The insightful research articles, analytic papers, and
lesson plans will ultimately prove invaluable to professional educators,
researchers, and counselors who are in dire need for valid, accurate, and
reliable information on sex education."
"Overall, I find the AJSE an extremely, useful, timely, and overdue contribution
to the oftentimes underrepresented and misrepresented field of sex education. I
am definitely giving it a thumps up."
Andreas G. Philaretou, PMCMFT, CFLE, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, Department of Family & Consumers Sciences
College of Education
Western Michigan University
"If this initial issue of the new journal is an indication of what is to come in
future issues, the authors are indeed creating a valuable and much needed
resource for all of us in the sexuality field."
Sally T. Lehr, PhD, RN, CS, FAACS
Associate Professor, Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing,
Emory University, Atlanta, GA

Dear Colleagues,
Since 1984, Eta Sigma Gamma has published a special Student Issue of the Health
Education Monograph Series. The Monograph has been successful because of the
support provided by chapter sponsors and faculty. To continue this success with
the 2006 monograph, we are requesting that you forward this e-mail to interested
students and encourage them to submit manuscripts for consideration. Both
undergraduate and graduate students are invited to submit manuscripts.
It is important that you or other faculty at your institution review student
manuscripts prior to their submission. The Faculty Sponsor Form provides a
guideline for your review and should be included with each submission.
Manuscripts must be postmarked by January 20, 2006.
You and your students will find the following information on the Eta Sigma Gamma

What is the Student Monograph?
In 1982, Eta Sigma Gamma began publishing a monograph series addressing topics
of broad interest and appeal to health educators. Since 1984, the Spring
Monograph has been dedicated to publishing papers written by student members of
the Honorary.
Who Can Submit Manuscripts?
Any undergraduate or graduate student who is a member in good standing of Eta
Sigma Gamma can submit a manuscript for consideration. Students may submit their

What type of Manuscripts are Appropriate?
Empirical research papers, critical literature reviews on specific topics, case
studies about aspects of program planning, practical perspectives, commentaries
and position papers, and other creative papers related to health promotion,
health education, and health science are encouraged. Students should consider
revising and submitting appropriate papers, which they have written during their
professional preparation. Only original manuscripts that have not been accepted
or published previously will be considered.
How are Manuscripts Evaluated and Selected for Publication?
Each manuscript will receive a blind review from at least three reviewers.

writing style and grammar, content accuracy, clarity and economy of expression.
Based on the results of the review and availability of space, the Monograph will
select and publish as many manuscripts as possible.
When is the Deadline for Submitting a Manuscript?
Manuscripts must be postmarked by January 20, 2006.
