Living in Oregon and valuing the Death with Dignity Law that Oregon has, perhaps
this means more to me than others. But if you are pro health, pro sexuality
education, pro-environment, pro-public health, pro-social service
infrastructure, I suggest you read the following and take action.

This communication is 4-fold: 1) to announce the distance education option for
both graduate and undergraduate degrees in Health Promotion, 2) to emphasize the
importance of a distance education program option, 3) to brag about how
University of New Orleans (UNO) was the only college/university to sustain its
Fall semester and not cancel like others did and, 4) to invite you to visit.
The University of New Orleans Department of Human Performance and Health
Promotion (HP/HP) offers a distance education option for both graduate and
undergrad Health Promotion degrees. The official launch of the distance
education option was poised to be September 2005 but Hurricane Katrina
interfered. However, because we had developed the distance education option we
were prepared to meet the teaching needs and were able to teach all of our Fall
courses. In addition, health promotion faculty served as mentors to other
university faculty who were forced to teach via distance education for the 1st
time (the other option was to teach at a satellite campus, but many of us were
widely dispersed, and transient- I had to move 5 times w/ my husband, 2 kids, 3
dogs and 4 guinea pigs).
The Department of HP/HP has offered on-campus degree programs in Health
Promotion and related areas for over 10 years. Graduates at both undergrad and
graduate levels are able to sit for the national Certified Health Education
Specialist (CHES) examination (UNO is a CHES testing site); those who have taken
the exam have passed rates above the national average. The HP Program at UNO has
an excellent reputation; our graduates go on to do wonderful things, at local,
regional, and national sites too numerous to mention. We also offer a
collaborative PhD.
There is no better time to come to UNO and be part of the effort as New Orleans
recovers and rebuilds from Hurricane Katrina. If you are interested in obtain an
undergraduate, or graduate degree in Health Promotion or are interested in
developing a distance education option, please contact Lorelei Cropley DrPH,
CHES at lcropley@uno.edu <mailto:lcropley@uno.edu>. Or go to the UNO website
www.uno.edu </exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.uno.edu/>.
We want you here! If you don't need/want a degree, come to New Orleans. I will
PERSONALLY take you to see the devastated areas- words and pictures will not
suffice- and put you in touch with agencies that are assisting the hardest hit
communities (several tour companies are now offering disaster area tours- these
tours sell out). And afterwards I'll send you off to a great joint where you can
get great food and hear some smokin' music.
Bear with my typing- I am one handed now d/t a broken arm...
