Greetings Fellow Health Educators=85
=20
It=92s been a while since I have sent anything out over the HEDIR so I = thought
it would be a good time to give you an update on what=92s happening.
=20
Currently, the HEDIR has 1,534 participants. In addition, current and = past
HEDIR members are posted on the HEDIR Directory at = www.hedir.org/directory You
can access those individual=92s emails and other pertinent material.
=20
We are in the 13th year of the HEDIR listserv. (by the way, all = messages are
archived at www.hedir.org <http://www.hedir.org/> ). One of the = great things
about the HEDIR has been the interactivity of the members=85and = the great help
we give to one another. When a person asks for help they are often overwhelmed
with responses=85I=92ve tried to encourage the = interactivity, although at
times I would need to intercede to =91cool=92 things off=85 = that has occurred
less and less over the past couple of years. That is what I = would like to
address the members about.
=20
I have noticed less and less chatter on the HEDIR. Now, I see both good = and
bad from this. The good in that what we do receive is thoughtful and typically
relevant to the topic=85the bad news is that we rarely have = those responses
anymore. It seems like the HEDIR is just a mechanism to share jobs, grant
announcements from Center for Health and Health Care in = Schools or an
occasional announcement about a conference. Now, I don=92t mind = those and I
think the HEDIR can serve a purpose in this, but what has been = lost has been
the occasional debates, discussions about issues, or = willingness to share
ideas. I don=92t want the HEDIR to be just another mechanism to = send out
announcements. For those of you who are relatively new to the HEDIR, =
go to
the archives and look at some of the discussions.
=20
Granted, some of previous discussions got old after a few days=85and = there
were times when the constant rehashing of CHES, combining health with physical
education, or starting a new national association would be both invigorating but
also exhausting. =20
=20
I believe the decline in the HEDIR discussions can be attributed to any = of the
following:
=20
1) More lists are available;
2) People get so much email that it is overwhelming to read all;
3) People are tired of debating issues;
4) People are too busy to get involved with email discussions;
5) The Digest mode of the HEDIR
=20
Probably all of these are contributing to what I foresee as the decline = of
messages (again, I am not necessarily against fewer messages=97I am = afraid
that the HEDIR is being weaned away from its original purpose=97to = provide
support to health educators. Although more lists are available, I am constantly
receiving request for information about the HEDIR=85it still appears to be the
best at sharing communiqu=E9 among its members. I = also believe the DIGEST mode
is playing a big part=85
=20
For those of you who do not know what the DIGEST mode is, the DIGEST = mode is
when you can have all HEDIR messages delivered to you at once. Thus, = all of
the HEDIR messages sent on Tuesday will be sent to you Wednesday = morning.
When we would receive 15-20 messages a day I would get a lot of requests = to
add this option=97which I did around 2002=85the problem with the DIGEST = mode
is that people may not respond in a timely manner because the message is
received the day after it is sent=85thus, if somebody on Tuesday is = asking for
help about a course they are teaching, and if I get it on Wednesday, I = may not
want to respond=85since there=92s the believe that the question = asked on
Tuesday may not be relevant on Wednesday. =20
=20
The DIGEST does stop emotional responses to a message posted on the = HEDIR, but
in doing so it is also reducing any immediate response.
For those of you who are on the DIGEST mode, I would encourage you to = try
receiving the HEDIR without the DIGEST. Below my name is a protocol to = do this
directly=97you won=92t have to run it through me.
=20
Just some thoughts=85I hope you have an enjoyable weekend. =20

Mark
I do remember the days when HEDIR was a central focus
of professional development for many of us in the
field of health education and I do long for those
glory days. I also am unsure why HEDIR has
essentially become a re-broadcasting arm for
e-newsletters. Let me put out a few more reasons that
come to my mind.
1. In addition to the digest version of the list,
there was a time when the default on the reply
function was back to HEDIR and at some point that was
changed to default back to the original poster. I
remember when that change was made that it help cut
some of the volume of messages and prevented some
mistakes of personal messages getting posted publicly.
But it also took some of the steam out of some of the
ongoing conversations. I think that contributed some
to dismantling the intensity of the community, but it
likely does not alone account for the decline.
2. Back in the day, 13 yrs ago, the concept of the
network was new and invigorating. Never did a
technology fill a need to network as HEDIR did. But,
as you point out today everyone is inundated with
email, enewsletters, eadvocacy alerts, even ebirthday
cards! I think we are eoverloaded and are now
changing our interaction patterns with email. That
likely has contributed to the decline.
3. I also personally think as public health
professionals we have been under assault by this
whacked administration and for many of us, we are
trying to survive and we are hunkered down. When
things are going well, we have times to feed our
collective soul but in this environment where the very
social fabric of everything we stand for science,
justice/empowerment, and development is under attack.
When we are constantly fighting to keep whacks from
eviscerating adolescent health textbooks,
science-based prevention programs and dismantling the
social service infrastructure, there is little time to
engage in academic debate and growth.
However, I would suggest that you have a doctoral
dissertation for some student in the making as you
start trying to tease out the reasons. Let us know
how we can help, as I am sure I am talking for a lot
of people.
m
ps. I'll send some other thought when I have a bit
more time.

Dear Health Education Professional:
=20
The purpose of the letter is to remind you to register and make your =
plans now to attend the "Third National Congress for Institutions =
Preparing Health Educators: Linking Assessment, Accountability, and =
Program Improvement". The Congress will be held February 23-25, 2006 at =
the Hilton Dallas Lincoln Centre, in Dallas, Texas. We have nearly 150 =
professors already registered; however the special conference rates for =
the hotel end on February 1, 2006. The 2 =BD day meeting will include =
both lively plenary sessions with major credentialing updates as well as =
many concurrent sessions tailored to the needs and interests of health =
education faculty and administrators.
=20
This will be an opportunity for all professional preparations programs =
to examine the profession-wide effort to implement the recommendations =
related to a unified system of accreditation for professional =
preparation in health education (see www.healthedaccred.org =
<http://www.healthedaccred.org/> ). Many of these recommendations are =
now beginning to be implemented. Additionally, the results of the =
6-year National Health Educator Competencies Update Project (CUP) has =
resulted in a new hierarchical model of the roles of health educators =
which will impact professional preparation programs at the =
baccalaureate, master's and doctoral levels.
=20
Given the major significance of these developments in the =
field, the leadership of the American Association for Health Education =
(AAHE) and the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) urge =
representatives from your professional preparation program to attend =
this important meeting. Representatives will be expected to be active =
participants in conference sessions and share information from the =
conference with colleagues upon their return home. The objectives for =
the conference are to:
=20
* Update professional preparation program administrators and faculty of =
the move to a unified system of accreditation for the health education =
profession.
* Assist in the profession-wide dissemination and discussion of the =
National Health Educator Competencies Update Project (CUP) as it impacts =
professional preparation, certification, accreditation, and professional =
development.
* Communicate the steps necessary to prepare a program for accreditation =
and the current timeline for transition from approval to accreditation.
* Provide an opportunity for representatives to identify issues and =
build capacity for the transition to a unified accreditation system for =
the health education profession.
* Develop a roadmap for strengthening quality assurance for the health =
education profession for the next five years.
=20
Given tight budget times, every attempt has been made to keep the =
conference expenses affordable to all professional preparation programs. =
The registration fee for the conference (prior to February 7) is $185 =
per person, including materials, breaks, continental breakfasts, and =
lunch. After the pre-registration period the fee is $250. Information on =
registration, lodging and conference sessions is on the websites below =
and on www.healthedaccred.org <http://www.healthedaccred.org/> .=20
=20
We hope that your department will be represented at the profession-wide =
Congress, however, it essential to act now. If you have questions =
regarding the conference, please contact AAHE at (703) 476-3437. =
On-line registration and program information is available with a link =
from www.aaheinfo.org <http://www.aaheinfo.org/> and www.sophe.org =
<http://www.sophe.org/> . We look forward to seeing you in Dallas.

Marks and others interested:
Fulop is probably right about those of us who fired off zesty, bareknuckled
comments about controversial topics in the early days of HEDIR getting
overwhelmed by competing list services and other applications of electronic
communications. He is probably also right about some of the grassroots health
educators being hunkered down trying to survive.
In my case, I took on time and one-half employment for two years. My schedule in
the full time job, plus the commute to and from work curtailed my participation
in HEDIR dialog. Since I reduced my employment to half time (retirement teaching
option at Texas Woman's University), I have had some major family health
concerns and grieving of dying relatives and colleagues to address.
Of course, there were some early participants in the heated exchanges who were
easily offended and withdrew from the excahnges. I heard that one of our
colleagues vowed to never speak to me again. He is politically conservative,
which does not necessarily mean he is pleased with some of the actions of the
presidential administration. He found the liberal ideas of some of the more
active contributors to HEDIR dialog threatening.
One of the better functions of HEDIR that I have appreciated, along with the job
vacancy and continuing education announcements, has been a sharing of the the
good (engagements, weddings, promotions, etc.) and the bad (illness, injuries
and disaster/disaster relief stories). It is good to learn when colleagues have
events affecting their lives. I particularly appreciated the sharing of Bob
Russell's experience on the "offramp of life" and his obituary. Other important
messages that I appreciated in the past year were on the illness of Bill Kane,
the challenges Hurricanes Katrina and Rita visited upon Michael Pejsach and
others in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas, and the trauma experienced by
Michael Jenkins.
While I have not contributed nearly as much to the dialog on HEDIR for the past
couple of years, I have continued to find the messages I receive highly
worthwhile. Maybe most of those 1,500 plus members of this list service are
pleased that a few of us are posting less frequently these days.
